So realms confer the best bonuses in the game and will have a huge impact on results of quality and character development. Currently someone can decide to fuck a player by excluding the Thingwall their village sits in. They get no bonuses and will likely quest in nearby thingwalls giving the realm authority while really sticking it to that one hermit. Its pretty bullshit but there is the argument of moving your entire goddamn village, which I'm sure most players can understand is cancer.

Or you can make your own realm with hookers and blackjack. All fine and well until you do and then you have to wait 20+ real life days (why the fuck are some in game timers in real life while some arent?) before you can even challenge a thingwall. Best part is some thingwall that isnt part of a realm also has a cooldown before it can be claimed. So many good suggestions for this have been put out. Please consider looking at them. Realms currently suck the big one.

War flags no longer require being in a realm at all to build, and the builder can choose to build the flag to expand any of the neighboring realms to the attacked tile.
The cooldown of building a war flag is removed.
A challenge cooldown of a day or so tied to the challenger's village would be ideal, but I don't think you can differentiate dummy villages so it seems like a waste of time. No or limited cooldowns would be fine as long as the character doing the challenging is at risk and not a vandal alt.
A one day "protection" period is added to a any freshly claimed thingwall, preventing new war flags from being built.
A newly claimed thingwall cannot be used to further extent the realm during the "protection" period. Similar rules to building village banners.
War flag material cost reduced to be trivial. Maybe five ropes and some blocks.
War flags should have like 10 soak minimum to prevent fresh alts from slapping flags.
The war flag retains the same grace-no-bashy period dealy as now, except the grace period is only 10-20 minutes, even with guarded marches, and the active period is 10 minutes.
The warflag disintegrates if the person who built it leaves the region, or some other mechanic to prevent people from just hail-mary building flags 24/7.
War flags can only be built by characters with developed skulls, or ideally the top 20-30% strongest characters if you wanna make a cool needlessly complex function. Enough to exclude vandal alts, but be inclusive for average players, ideally.
Everybody inside BOTH the attacking and defending realm's borders is alerted whenever a war flag is built, including the thingwall name, and MAYBE the skull name of the person who built it.
Building a war flag is ALWAYS leave a scent of some kind.
The realm buffs icon displays how many thingwalls are in the realm.
No claims OR building within render distance of thingwalls to prevent autism.
Let people build milestones & roads like within render, tho.
Move the thingwalls away from water to prevent gay ass cancer boat fights. Give them a road that (like paved path, not milestones) that extends from the thingwall to the nearest water. The road has the same claim & building protection as the thingwall.
IDEALLY a mechanic added to find thingwalls easily, like them appearing on the map whenever you enter their region, or a quest given to see it with an arrow whenever that quest is selected.

Realms suck but changing the war flag mechanics just changes out the abuses. It will always be bad.

The issue isn't how they will always, eternally suck until the end of time, but character/industry progression is tied behind them. And if you aren't autistic enough to make your own realm, you just have to hope there isn't someone autistic enough to make a grief realm (there is).

Realm chat is the only good thing about realms. And the implementation of that sucks, a general world chat would be better. Or let people realm chat when not in the realm.

lol just move your entire village every time realm borders change or your realm dies through no fault of your own, or suffer through knowing you're at a big disadvantage because of buffs.

Anyway, why is the population so low late world?

I have made my own realm. Now I have to wait 20 + days before any of the fucking thingwalls can be challenged, 6+ for the one that isnt even currently held by ANY REALM. Early world I get it but this shit is about to pop off let me test the mechanics. Youd think building a coronation stone would do something like a challenge. Its not like people are going to spam coronation stones.

Also, it asks you what realm you are from like "I of __________" an then lists a bunch of cool lore stuff, but like whatever I type in isnt the name of the realm? Thats just kind of silly.

I would 100% spam coronation stones to destroy people's realms a bit faster if I were annoyed/bored. I prolly have materials for 100 coronation stones they I won't use for anything before the end of the world, but that's still a very effective strategy even with current mechanics.

You're probably wasting your time if you're trying to make a realm for yourself for the buffs. The amount of authority anything near full buffs will take means you're gonna need somewhere between 50-100 tiles at least to be able to maintain that with the current player population. If you get that big people from my village will get bored and kill you/siege your village, prolly. Certainly destroy your menhirs/grotesques at least, if we can find them.

a more flexible random mechanic is village based "Terroir"

each claim would "mature" over time, developing a random unique "Calling"

players would have to investigate over time all kinds of products, and notice what are the village's special products, which could make the world economy interesting
