I think we should kind of go the opposite way... instead of having players do something to end the world, it should have a "death date" and people should do things to add days to it.
For example:
The world has X days from the start.
Every time a player gains Experience, a very small amount of time is added to the world (maybe a % based on the XP gained), making every single player contributing passively to the length of the world by simply playing it.
Add an "active" way to add days: something expensive, only major factions can work on... not sure what, maybe something linked to realms or sacrificing very rare items or something...
If enough people play, the world just keeps gaining enough days passively to constantly extend its life. When population goes down, the remaining players have a choice to slowly run out of days, or actively work to gain more days and keep the world up. If population goes too far down, or remaining players don't work towards extending the world, it will eventually run out of time and reset.
They should figure out a good balance between the X starting days, the % gained passively, and the % gained actively (and what exactly that would require), so that it's not impossible to gain days later on, but also a small group (or worse, bots) can't just keep the world running forever.
