Discussion: PVP Zones

Postby Zentetsuken » Thu Apr 28, 2022 5:16 pm

Most MMOs that feature some form of open world PVP have specified zones for PVP and "safe zones"

What are people's thoughts on having a safe zone in Haven?

It could be anything from a spin off of the Salem safe zone where there are still some dangers, or a whole center spawning island where people can build markets and travel safely without worrying about PVP.

Would this work at all, or is it immediately shot down because of the "what about the other ways we can fuck with people that aren't PVP" debate?

Would it work if there was a a permanently protected "dev claim" encompassing a prebuild market? Or something like this?

Could we ever assume that safe zone might be implemented with an explicit warning that blatant trolling and botting with the obvious intent to grief would be met with divine intervention? Would this be enough?

Isn't that the whole point of the visitor buff system? And honestly, it's worked pretty great. Since its introduction we have seen many player market projects that flourished as a result.

In part, but I recall there being a pretty large discussion about having a central dev-created marketplace at some point. This is more offer a central trading zone that is not susceptible to siege with the added proposition of it being surrounded by a PVP-free zone.

My only concern with that would be it might make raiding and sieging a little less relevant, I fear it'll be a vault for everything valuable (for sale or not). Maybe if there was a way to sell stuff in the market while also storing it at your base? Making it a PVP free zone would work fine though.

Exactly, it isn't really, this would just bury it deeper. I like the premise, and I'm not totally against it by any means, just the idea of a 100% safe storage bothers me.

I do recall a big boi discussion we had about this in one of jorbos streams and honestly I think it'd be super good for the game. Some kind of central area where people are drawn to would be really big for the community and it's better if it's a place preset by the devs as it's a ridiculous amount of work to manage for a community member and it remains a ridiculous amount of work for the duration of the world basically.

I like the local markets that pop up naturally all over the world.
Player enforced safe zones is the way to go for Haven now and forever.
Its a -1 from me.
