Reducing Tedium for Cosmetics

Postby Joshk80k » Thu Aug 25, 2022 5:12 am

I've been a long time player, but I always end up focusing more on the function of the base rather than the beautification. Every world I get a little more into trying to make my base aesthetically appealing, but the work is sometimes overwhelming just to make your place look nice. I love the variety of colors and I'm always thrilled when you all unveil a new customizable piece of furniture, but would it be possible to reduce the cost of metal pavement? Ideally down to a nugget but I am biased in wanting to pave with metal. As it stands, I just don't think it's a feasible option for me unless I started botting. One world, I decided to pave my town square (which was small, 30x30) with bronze and it took a crazy amount of time, and I ended up just feeling a little bitter about not having more knowledge about running a bot. I think this would result in seeing way more bases with more unique pavement options, but I just can't justify it with any metal other than tin and I don't really like how that looks paved.

I also really like lanterns, but I feel like it's such a chore to keep them lit, even the irrilight process is kind of tedious. Maybe this is an even bigger ask, but what do you think of letting these lanterns burn permanently? I love the way it looks but if I get even a little lazy I just can't keep up, and I don't think too many people use the aesthetic lanterns with the practical use in mind.

Thanks for the consideration!

Lanterns are practical, you can use them to light things; they're essentially the upgrade to having a campfire with a torch. I use a lantern for purely practical purposes (well, not right now because it's locked behind collecting 50 candleberries, but it's going to be one of the first things I'll make once I get an anvil).

That said, I certainly wouldn't mind getting some way to make them last longer as refueling is indeed a pain. There is currently no direct upgrade beyond the lantern + lanternstand, so some way to extend the duration would be a good next step. (Matches and Flint & Steel are alternatives for lighting things, but they don't have the convenience of being able to just right-click an object in the world, right-click the structure to light, and right-click it back in place.)

I didn't realize you could use them to light things, that's pretty cool. I really just want to have lamp posts in my village without having to go into a house and smashing together two cat golds over and over to refuel them every couple of days, (maybe there's a less tedious way to get irrlights, idk) I don't really have a solution there, more of an ask so that I can install aesthetically appealing lights in my base without having to refuel all the time.

I'ma be real, I see no reason for an irrlight which can't (so I'm told anyway) be used to light things to burn out.

I'd be fine with irrlights being permanent.

Wait, can't you use tallow candles on a lantern? Unless you have a ridiculous amount of lanterns, tallow shouldn't be that much work. They burn for quite some time

If you have multiple lanterns, make and use a torch for refuelling instead. The game isn't forcing you to have all of those lanterns...

EDIT: Ooooh, okay, this is irrlights. Gotcha. Yeah, for such a pain in the ass of acquiring an irrlantern that doesn't even light fires, it probably should burn forever.

Indeed you can, though Irrlanterns are the exception, those are purely aesthetic. For relighting lanterns, it's been a while but if I'm not mistaken you can just replace the candle to refuel without having to relight, you just need to do it before it burns out.
