New Carts - Volume 1: The Mine Cart

Postby Mr_Bober » Thu Sep 22, 2022 12:28 am

Today we're going to explore a few ideas for new carts. We'll begin with something that would make the lives of every miner a lot better: the Mine Cart.

A Mine Cart would be a large objects you can pull, much like the cart we have now. The main difference would be that instead of accepting liftable objects, it would have a special inventory (similar to a stockpile) that would only accept mining byproducts. It could be limited to stone and ore, but frankly I believe it would be best if it accepted other things like petrified seashells, strange crystals, and gems as well.

A Mine Cart would require the Wheel Wrighting and the Metal Working skills for sure, but it might also require Basic Mechanics or even Deep Artifice.
To buil a Mine Cart you would require some wood components, as well as metal (hard metal, most likely). [Note: one or two Strange Crystals could also be added to the recipe as a decoration, just to make those crystals useful for something].

The Mine Cart should be more efficient at moving ore than the current system of carts, wheelbarrows, and boats. A normal cart filled with wheelbarrows can bring up to 450 ore. That's 525 if you also lift a wheelbarrow, or 600 if you lift a boat with two wheelbarrows in it. That being considered, the Mine Cart should carry at least 750 ore/stone, or more.

It's time to give miners some well deserved love.

+1 would be nice to expand on vehicles, both carts and wagons, to make them a larger part of the game. This for sure would be helpful!

While I am a big lover of industrialization and everything that can use rails, I'm struggling to build even a cross for an ore spot in this game.
I don't really see a use for it in the game, unless used as larpy thing like mine elevator

Mine elevator has been good to use as a mailbox, for our surface dwellers to send boughs down to our dwarves, and they send up cat gold. For a single player, it doesn't make sense.

Nobody is talking about rails here. Just a cart you can pull with a storage for ore instead of slots for liftable items or a normal container.

Adding rails to it would completely make this useless, considering mines are built on different levels and it would make it very inefficient to build a bunch of rails just to get to a lower level and start over the next week.
