well root

plant the grows a taproot down to ground water level, thus only growing where the water level is relatively high, and telling that distance to the player by length of it's root when picked, either directly written, or by giving that many items of the root. maybe even make it's quality reflect the water quality.

tiny idea, but I like that it allows looking at how the plants grow to get an idea of the structure of the world you can't directly see.

This is an awesome idea and honestly I wish we had more items/forageables that told you information or reflected the world like this, cavedust, mandrakes, etc.

Picking a rustroot could tell you the mineral in the tile directly below it, for example.
Total misplay.

Rly good idea, tbh. 99% of new content suggested here is just "add new thing same as all the other things for no reason", but this actually has a mechanic, reduces tedium, and thematically makes sense.

I like the idea of it reflecting the quality of the water below, would be very useful rather than the current dowsing system. Perhaps Dowsing can be used to hunt these roots.

+1 on the water quality would reduce a lot of needless rope making just to check if the water is good.

+1, would love to see this as either a forageable or a plant, or even just changing how dowsing rod works so that anybody would care about it at all.

It is always a pain to throw several wells down trying to find the best spot inside of the walls
