Moving away from IP and SoS

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Moving away from IP and SoS

Postby talon00302 » Tue May 28, 2024 6:29 pm

A thought that popped into my mind is how awful it feels to restart every encounter with IP stacking. Something that popped into my mind would be making abilities into combos so they still yield some tangible feedback/output but at a reduced effectiveness. For example sword of storms could be 2 smaller single target attacks leading to an aoe like it does now.

Theres a lot of possible ways it could be looked at but it’s just a passing thought and nothing more.

IP sucks, it forces people to stand around staring at the start of a fight. In addition, it heavily favors groups with more players. Larger groups get to use high-cost moves more, while the smaller group has to defend more which just gives even more IP.

IP should just be generated by attacking/getting attacked, and it starts to expire if neither person has hit each other for a while.

SoS sucks because it's the only button you need to press, the openings are just too high.

i think IP shouldn't be the main resource in combat, it should be pushed to beign more like you suggested - using certain moves can consume IP for enchancement
major resource should be one that is fully charged in beginning of the fight - for example stamina but I think ppl will ree at me for proposing it cause it will favour running side, on the contrary it can also give more ways for noobs to fuck themselves in combat so that's a plus

They should add defensive colour reductions to armour types, So you get counterplay rather than wack a mole with buffs and nerfs.

So you'd need basically 2-3 armor sets on you at all times that you have to swap depending on the enemy deck while the decks can be swapped freely without carrying anything extra?

I like the idea of combo moves but then again idk how much i trust the devs to implement it in a way where you don't just keep on spamming one combo, i do agree that all that initial running around and take aiming sucks tho which makes decks like SoS that self-fuel (and would still self-fuel due to how zig zag works even if it cost 4 ip) super prone to abuse.

Raise your hand if you think devs should spend their time/attention on reworking combat in Haven.
I've identified all the misguided people

Edit: I guess I am guilty of this too. I think that the str/con/equipment scaling teased in the W15 prelude patch notes would have been good. But as a general rule, I think that combat is in an acceptable place (better than it has ever been?) and that it's such a small part of the game that time really should be spent focused on other things. Like getting the game on steam, getting the default client to be newb friendly and packaged with Java, etc

I think it would be more interesting if moves didn't require IP at all, but instead, they required a color to be opened enough for that move to be used, just like how bats behave.
A bat requires some green open to use Wingbeat, and some yellow open to use Vampirism.
Fell scratch opens green and wingbeat opens yellow. GRACEFUL PROGRESSION COMBAT?!?!?!??!
That would require a much bigger rework of the combat system tho, sadly.

For hafen maybe, I haven't pvped seriously in the last decade so I can't form a true opinion. Legacy felt so much better than the shoehorn deck/color system we have today, especially after the world 7 tweaks to combine skill/stat combat. Holy hell does it feel bad to hunt animals, restarting the combat system over and over to get IP in a boat/distance/whatever and have to deal with armor on animals but that's an entirely separate topic. I really wish JLo would have kept pushing forward with their w13? combat rewrite that only went into beta for a little bit before being retired due to ping issues. Truly a shame.
