Trees on grass

Could we lay down mulch prior to planting a tree, or place mulch on a grown tree that will prevent forest biome from spreading? Purely for decorative tree planting.

My thought was planting a tree on claimed land would not affect the surrounding tiles, so you wouldn't have to constantly replant grass or plow fields, or have paving for three tiles around the tree(s).

I personally use Crabapple or Mayflower trees for decorating, and those two trees in particular won't spread forest biome. It is my understanding that if it grows on a grassland, it won't spread Wald like the other trees do when planted on grass.

growing on grass naturally means nothing sadly, all spread wald if not on a forest tile

Surround the tile its planted on by stone paving until its fully grown, then stomp to dirt and plant grass.
The trees only spread Wald during the growing phase if I remember correctly.

Doesn't the forest tile under the tree spread ? Can't stomp that one.
