Alt vaulting is an issue. Let's solve it.

Using alts to keep safe valuable items and keys is boring and makes siege/theft kind of pointless.

So I've been thinking on how to solve this. Here's my thought process:

First idea: You simply can't logout with items in your inventory.
This sucks. I don't want to drop all my stuff in a cupboard everytime I have to logout. Even worse if I need to do so while I'm out the village.
So let's keep thinking.

Second idea: When you're offline, your HF becomes your inventory and can be accessed through Theft.
If the Thief can get to your HF, while you're offline (or even online? :?: ), they can steal from your inventory. This would make vaults less effective.
Problem: I would place all the alts hfs in a different claim, maybe underground, while keeping the alts in my village, so I can still access it.
Let's keep thinking.

Third idea: What if you never went fully offline?
Just like we see characters sleeping in their bed, we could see them sleeping on the ground.
Your sleeping character could just be a placeholder for your inventory. People couldn't attack it, it wouldn't block movement, and so on. Only interaction with it would be Theft.

Alts are only really useful if they are in your proximity, so you can access their content easily.
I'm sure some people would keep alts in a different claim elsewhere, but at that point it's just like keeping the items themselves in a different place: would be very annoying if you had to travel back and forth everytime you need one of the items.

I think that could work. Maybe it wouldn't eliminate the issue completely, but for sure would reduce it.

Thoughts?

Ultimate idea: fix siege

cus all of those will ensure people will be getting raided relentlessly through both legitimate and sus means

Also that means u are forced to play nonstop or stay logged in until you have a palisade up

I now have multiple getaway bases where my alts chill out to never be found.

I agree siege needs fixing, but I get the feeling we have opposite views. Are you saying siege is too easy?

I do see the issue of not having a palisade, but it's not too hard to hide in a cave.
A quick fix, not perfect but better than nothing, would be to turn this on only after the very first week of the world, which gives time to most people to put up their first palisade. If you join late, it's an incentive to join someone else I guess.

Sure you could do that. But every time you need an item from it you have to go get it, which is a major inconvenience compared to how it works now. I for sure wouldn't bother doing so just to keep safer a few items that are usually safe enough behind my palisade anyway.

+1 for sandbox gameplay

Didn’t they handle it like that in Salem?
I remember that destroying a personal claim (basically your hearthfire in this game) would spawn a ton of valuable items, which I always assumed were from that player’s inventory.

Losing your keys is a Game Over moment though. Get rid of keys and handle it via a permission window.

Also this little fella:

No, In salem you can access someones leanto (equivalent of a hf with some extra functionality like leanto from haven) if you have theft and steal directly from them if they're offline.
But, I don't think this is a real issue, all things considered, noobs have nothing to store that's valuable so who cares. And the big groups are not really siegable due to how the siege works out now, and even if they were they have 24-48h window to move shit out.
The one case where i see this as being useful is raiding abandoned bases and being able to loot people who quit but ehhh, i feel like if you already get their base at least let them keep their gear on them so IF (a big IF) they decide to come back they at least have some stuff to start with and not a naked char.
(Also it doesn't fix the fact you can just have another vault base with all the hfs inside it so you can have alts in your main base with shit in them but have another base to store their hfs in case your main base gets sieged which it most likely won't, nothingburger)

The only people who actually alt vault are those who are over protective or those under threat of a siege.

Newbs don't even have the brain cells to think about making alts let along one the hold their master keys, which even I don't bother doing.
99% people don't even ever run into an issue with a raiding someone with an alt vault simply because no one but factions raid in the first place.

There is a few instances I remember bashing soft palisades and watching people scramble for their q10 nettles to alt vault. I agree its a weird issue, but I don't think anyone really ever bumps into it.

although I am all for characters always being logged in +1.

I have mentioned this before actually where if sieging/raiding was more common and easier, people will need a way to keep some key progressive tools/items such as a pickaxe/hammer/leather for new pali etc.. and I think alt vaulting in that dream world would be standard and maybe newbs might need a more direct "Hey btw you are going to get raided you should probs log out with your some backup base supplies and tools incase you do" type thing which I too mentioned some sort of safebox that makes it an obvious feature instead.

In legacy it was common place that you would wake up with your walls bashed, and that's where alt vaulting became mainstream, this of course does not happen anymore and 95% of the player base never get raided once palisades are set.
