Hidden Hollows & Burrows

Postby Rebs » Wed Jan 14, 2026 1:51 am

I want to try and shift the paradigm a little with early game protection options and make it less of a day 1-2 thing, here is my rough suggestion.
Right now players have:
- Leantos theft protection
- pclaim + fences for theft protection
- pclaim + palisade walls for theft and vandal protection
After the first weekend option 1 and 2 are gone, and you HAVE to resort to hiding in a cave to wait out your leather for a wall, I think this is a little silly imo, and that Leantos and unwalled pclaims become obsolete after like day 3.

My suggestion is to help players hide and add some addition levels of "protection" that don't go obsolete after the first days of a new world.
1. Hidden Hollows and Burrows should be "claimable" similar to how Leantos are, once claimed they will be invisible to any other player that is further then 3 tiles away from it. (like the mechanic of players hiding in thickets).
2. Hidden Hollows requires theft to steal from someone's Hidden Hollow.
3. Give Hidden Hollows at least 2 container slots so its 100% a upgrade in storage vs leanto, there are some lifetables like dugouts people might want to keep in there not just containers.
4. Claimed Hidden Hollows require vandal to bash and theft to steal from and trespassing to open.
5. Claimed Burrows straight up cannot be entered by other players, and require a dried wreckingball to destory. (This + invis allows late joiners to have a good chance at survival)
6. They shouldn't show up on maps if claimed.
7. You can only have 1 Leanto, hollow or burrow on a character. (maybe)
8. Slightly increase the average size of burrows
9. Optionally add the invis mechanic to claimed leanto too, maybe making it less obsolete for hour 1 characters late world why not.
10. To avoid people claiming them and never unclaiming, They should have to maintained somehow like having to repair them, if it damage hits zero the claim dies but the structure remains. (Or whatever)

The Cost of "claiming" these should be progressive, ranging from the cost of a leanto to the cost of a claim pole + palisade. They shouldn't require any perquisites that require a "base", for example hides requiring drying frames.
Could be something random like a 5 chicken wishbones + 5 fresh squirrel tails + 20 Standing grass to create a hollow claim item that can be used on a Hollow (like bill of Possession) And maybe like 20 fresh hides + 20 bones + string + clay to make a "Burrow Cover" for the same effect on a burrow, keep in mind both are better then a unwalled pclaim.

Side note: Should allow us to build drying frames in burrows (I believe is a code issue though) or add some smaller liftable version that can dry 1 hide at a slower rate that we can pick up and put in burrows.

This I think we give us some interesting progression pre-wall. I think perhaps hidden hollows should be buildable too but not necessary and maybe claim pole cost and dry time can increase with this too.

To iterate, having a surface claim pre-walls is a death sentence honestly and you HAVE to resort to hiding in a cave and HAVE to get lucky not to be found.

I already see two obvious way to weaponize it.

1. Claiming the hidden hollow next to someone's village to do a surprise gank. Even easier than thicket since there's no penalty for staying there forever. Or even an alt to spy on the enemy dock undetected, or next to thingwalls. Good luck remembering where the hollows were if it's only visible from 3 tiles. Making it buildable would just make it impossible to avoid.

2. Same for claimed burrow, but worse, since it can't be destroyed easily. What about people with rage, or in combat, would they be able to enter it? I don't think they should, but then it turns into yet another set of rules that apply just there.

Just something to keep in mind.

1. The hidden hollow itself would be the only thing thats invis, please they would be bashable.

2. burrows would be a lot worse for sure for griefing but they can't expand that claim and if you setup your base and leave a burrow unclaimed near by thats kinda your own fault. they should be instantly bashable with wrecking balls if they are not claimed. also honestly using a burrow to ambush people sounds like fun. and as you mentioned we already have that mechanic in game with thickets which can't be removed at all.
