Can't find the other suggestion thread, but there was one which mentioned how sponge diving is becoming dangerous. Why not have an additional item that's an air sack or a life ring, that either expand air capacity or let your hearthling return to the boat after?
e.g. a lifering is automatically tethered to a knarr/snekkja and if you run out of stamina - you are slowly pulled back aboard where you can recover - unless you control-click off the lifering
