Persistence Hunting

Postby Nightdawg » Fri Mar 06, 2026 5:34 pm

In the spirit of not fixing stuff we've been complaining about for years, but rather making it worse (Steel Fuel running out, 1.5x speed now), here's my suggestion:

A BRAND NEW MECHANIC! (wow!)

Persistence Hunting

- Increase the armor of mammoths to one million. You can't damage the mammoth unless it's passed out (you're a tiny human, you can't overpower a big bad mammoth, mate)
- In order to knock out the large animal, you follow it around for days, until it passes out from exhaustion. I'd say 48 hours of real life time where at least 1 player has to follow the animal around should be fine. This fits perfectly with the anti-botting measures we usually see, that actually only help bots and make the game worse for the rest of us.

Once the persistence hunting is done, you can butcher it normally.
This Persistence Hunting mechanic could apply to many other animals too! (wow!)

Oh hey, I just got another amazing idea in the middle of this shitpost:

Persistence Hunting part 2:

- Quadruple the movement speed for fast animals (red deers, the other smaller more useless deers, the winter deers which are also useless shit, and moose). You can't catch the speedy animal unless it's exhausted (you're a funny human that doesn't have air jordans mate)

Thank you for your consideration

With modern technology, it's difficult to devise protection against bots. A human is more likely to fail the "bot check" than a bot.
If bots are banned (are they banned in Haven?), then the easiest way to combat them is to ban both the bots and the people who use them. This will dramatically reduce their numbers. It's not hard to tell a bot from a human.

As far as I understand, the devs treat bots like herpes. They acknowledge the fact that roughly 50% of population have it and there is nothing they can do about it except encourage personal hygiene. As in "the bots are not a sickness but a symptom, we will try to make our game as fun to play as we can so people use bots less". Stupid naive devs.

IMO it's more like the devs are antivaxxers, and the game is their child with cancer, and they are letting it die a slow and painful death while trying to treat it with some horse medicine or something

If bots aren't explicitly banned, there's nothing you can do. The benefits of using them are too obvious.
Even if the game is really interesting, and Haven is an interesting game, people will still use bots—when they're out of the game or simultaneously on another device.

That's why we have a lot of complex systems like experience points, hunger and quest scaling and global pools and basically all the game's inner workings are wrapped around "make it harder for people to get super buff titan humongously hulked out on day 3 of a new world using a legion of bots".

You can't ban bots unless you ban custom clients, and official client suuuuuuuucks.

Anyways, this thread should go to hel probably, being a self-admitted shitpost and such.

Many such cases, but I think satire is a legitimate form of C&I as long as some sincere suggestion is made afterward.

Instead of Hel, could we get a simple list of changes we'd rather see?

Yes, even with detection algorithms, game developers aren't very fond of banning bots. Perhaps because they're their "colleagues" or online. I saw a post somewhere that Haven developers prefer to make the game so interesting that people prefer to play themselves rather than use bots. Personally, I play without bots and have fun. I don't really care that others use bots. I don't approve, but I don't think about it either – I have my own game.

I agree with the author that some of the things done to combat bots don't actually hinder them, but for people, being forced to log in after so many hours to ensure their efforts aren't wasted is a "mandatory" and doesn't bring enjoyment. People should log in when they feel like playing, not to throw coal into the fire.

...erm, to persistense hunting? XD

No C&I in this particular hel-fodder, after the initial shitpost it's just offtopic all the way down. If an idea is worth discussing, it deserves it's own thread; and I honestly doubt "chasing a wounded mammoth for 20 days" is a worthy idea to elaborate on XD
