Pre-spawn screen

Postby serVar161 » Sun Apr 26, 2026 5:55 am

Idea: After you've selected a character, you don't spawn immediately. You proceed to the spawn mask screen, where you choose your spawn option or options. However, data is loading during this time.
The spawn mask screen prevents you from seeing or hearing what's happening at your default spawn point. It also prevents you from interacting with the game in any way, such as messages or online indicators. Until you choose to spawn, you're technically still in the game menu.

Options:
-"Spawn where you left." Primary.
-"Spawn at the bonfire." Secondary.
If you left the game, you could have teleported to the bonfire.
You knew what the situation was when you left the game at the spawn point, but you may not know what's happening there now.
Although I assume there's a "protection" that removes animals at the spawn point, since I've never spawned near animals or in the middle of a pack of wolves, there could be players there or the environment/surroundings change.
- "Appear near the exit location." or others. Situational.
For example, if the place you exited is occupied, someone kicked you out of bed, or broke your campfire.
The options offered in the character selection menu in such cases appear on the pre-spawn screen.
- "Exit to the menu".

All possible options may be displayed on the screen, but they may be grayed out and unselectable if the option is unavailable.
For example, after committing a crime.

Reason: Often after entering the game, you wait for some time for all the data to load. During this time, you could very well be killed, and you won't be able to do anything. It's much more enjoyable when you can act immediately after pressing spawn.
Also, the option to choose where to spawn can help avoid unpleasant situations.

+1

If for at least caves and dungeons. I get attacked by 3 wolves with a 4 second buffer before I can do or see anything. Make it act like milestone eye ball thing.

Make character pre-login act like milestone eye ball thing.

Yea. Clear, simple & straightforward.
(... and make fade-in in character creation room take less time.)

Is this even possible? Apparently, I always log out of the game in a safe place and that's why I haven't encountered it. I was really starting to think that the area where the player should appear is being cleared.

Do you mean to have an eye appear in the spawn area beforehand, like with road signs or the Tingle Tree?

the thing is, this adds yet another tiny button to press, third screen to go through to be in game. not what i'd like to see.
my advice (as proud potato pc owner) is to log off always inside a house. or even a burrow. it loads much faster than for example fully cluttered village center.

That's usually what I do.
But it's not always possible or desirable. For example, you're heading to a distant quest giver, but you need to finish playing. Or you haven't played in a while and can't remember where you last exited the game.
And sometimes it can be unsafe at home.

Tiny button ???
The normal in-game eye ball don't uses some ui-window.
There is no point or need to have it in this case either. ... Left-mouse-click: Commit/Jump in. Right-mouse-button: Cancel(back to character screen)
... But if dev's like to implement it in that way is an other matter.

Probably also comes with:
- Eye can be seen by other players.
- Countdown time (~1 minute -> auto commit.)
... If dev's are even going to consider it.

Needles to say. Character creation room and Valhalla area can do without this.

Unfortunately, this option isn't suitable.
I considered it for both this idea and the other one (with prisons), but they have major downsides. The main one is that they'll be used for surveillance and ambushes.
To prevent surveillance, the viewing radius could be limited, but it won't have much of an impact—they'll be placed near all tingwalls or base entrances.

It seems like a good idea to have a small eye appear when teleporting to a campfire, just like with road signs, tingwall trees, and other methods, so you can see what's happening around the campfire. For example, to avoid getting blocked.
The downside is that sometimes you need to quickly teleport home. And there's no time to remember which button to press to teleport and which to cancel.
Or you could accidentally cancel by pressing the wrong button. And that could be fatal.
Even the moment it takes to press "Teleport" can be enough for your teleport to be interrupted.
And the main downside, of course, is surveillance with them. Safe.

The option with the eye at the place where you exited is even worse. While you can do something with a campfire, or at least understand that someone is watching you, with an eye at the point where you exited, there's nothing you can do.
Stalking and ambushes will reach a new level.
