Romov dug out some of the gem files and provided a link in the wiki topic... Does this help you?

More specifically:

from above you can tell that gems follow a "size-cut" format going from "small rough" all the way up to "jotun brilliant". These however are all transparent "ghosts" of gems which are then populated with color. according to gem type.

these might work for you, but im not 100% certain on that. I'd try making a few test gem "ghosts" and seeing if they work. if that doesnt work, i'd try pestering romovs for a more in depth answer
