Java licensing changes in 2019

Just posting this here. Java drops support for JRE 8 and companies are starting to roll it out now in favor of JRE 10, and the two versions won't be cross-compatible from what I know.

Will this have any effect on further game development?

I would hope they update.
This is a good question though.

Probably no.
Just ask people to download java 8.
Its not like it would be going anywhere.

Java 8 Public Updates for non commercial private users will be still downloadable manually or automaticly free till December 2020 ...

Eol for Java 8 just means it's not getting any Updates but critical ones and commercial users have to pay for those ...

and btw march 19 sees the General Availability oj Java SE 12 ... :P

The way I read it, as a private user, it won't be an issue. Developers may have problems if they don't have a large income stream.

A lot of free, open source software is done in Java. Going to suck if all of that is lost because Oracle got a bug up their ass about profitability.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

if you're able to compile yourself, got Mercury on Linux you're good ;) ... if you want binaries for i.e. Windows it links back to Oracles download pages anyways ...
