Did you use the Default Client (Play button on the website banner.)

or

Any of the custom clients? (Only one I currently use is the Nurgling)

You can try the other one. At least for me, curiously, for the longest time up-to-date custom client has worked much better than default. However the default client has gotten much better lately with the new autohaven-[accountname].jar system. Originally the idea was that you press "Play" and that is the only thing you need to do, thanks to Java Applets. That was actually one of the main reasons why devs chose Java as the language/platform.
