Skill Decay?

Postby Brickbreaker » Wed Feb 17, 2010 12:45 am

I think skill decay should be implemented because personally I think that its ridiculous that someone can be good at everything and possibly more sufficient and produce higher quality tools than an entire village.
It will also allow people that work in villages to specialize and make high quality stuff, while those that play alone focus on the skills they need but will never get their skills high enough to make a high quality object.

Bad idea. Do you often forget how to ride a bike? No, No you do not. And because of how the LP system is, you don't get LP towards certain skills by doing said skills, you get LP from doing -anything-. So constantly having to raise a skill just to keep it at a reasonably high level isn't a good idea.

That's a bit more understandable, if you mean Strength, Agi, etc. Though I still wouldn't care for the idea, I could see the realism aspect of it though. IE: A person having to work to stay strong, etc. This would also allow for someone to restat themselves, if say, You ate a lot of the wrong FEP foods as a newbie (Goddamn you bread) and would like to raise other skills as well, however this would be hard to implement with the FEP system being how it is, since it takes more FEPs to raise you to the next stat increase per every FEP you've gained before.
Unless you mean the skill attributes, such as Blacksmithing, Survival, etc which was what I thought you meant originally, which I still think is a terrible idea. But that's just my opinions.

Im talking about blacksmithing and carpentry etc..
And what you said about you never forget how to do things is true, but if you haven't done something since a long time ago then you would still be able to do it but not as good as before. Which is my point.

Have you noticed how it takes progressively more and more LP to raise an attribute up, the larger the attribute?
Explain how making someone who invests in having 600 blacksmithing having to constantly spend gobs upon gobs of LP to keep their blacksmithing at that level is reasonable. Especially considering that by your method, they would have to choose basically one skill or another, giving anyone who's just a hunter/fighter a massive advantage at keeping their skills up over other people. Kill one bear, keep your 600 unarmed. Mine/Smelt/Craft for four hours and still don't quite get enough LP to keep your blacksmithing level.

Assuming that 600 smithing is a hard thing to get (because I cant even dream of having an attribute that high) then that's the price a player will have to pay if he wants to get those highest of quality products. Total devotion to that attribute. However Im not saying that you have to focus 100% on 1 attribute, you can always decide to raise and sustain the ones you or your village needs, you just wont be getting high q items as a person who picks fewer attributes than you. As for the hunters getting more LP cant it always be rebalanced to suit the new system?
