An idea for money

Postby Brackwell » Tue Aug 10, 2010 5:47 pm

Only the truly generous and faithful have given their hard-earned money to help support Haven and Hearth. We all enjoy it and we all want to see it prosper. Here's a small idea to persuade those who are less-than-willing to donate.

I don't know which currency would be better so I will just use mine for the sake of the idea.

For every $1.00 you character is credited 100lp!

Whether or not the lp you get transfers over to new worlds is another question.

So if you have a lot of disposable income, donate $100 and you can get 100,000lp and Murder everyone! (You'll probably get tracked down and killed and you'll barely retain any of that lp you bought because you had full Change belief but it was fun for awhile, right?)

Edit: Whoops, sorry. I'm tired and forgot to add the part where after so much money that is donated you get more lp for your donation. That's why $100 doesn't add up to 100,000lp.

Objectively bad idea. That will do nothing more than piss people off. If you want a game where you can quickly become over-powered because you have money to blow, go play one of Nexon's games. The community here is pretty nice, but as soon as you make paying for stats a possibility, then you're going to attract all of the little immature kids who think they are better than other players because they can use mommy and daddy's credit card to level up. I've seen it happen to waaaay too many good MMOs.

How do you mean? Kids paying money to level up their characters? Money that will be used to ultimately make the game better?

That's not where I was going with this idea.

I agree, but I want to see this game become even better, and sadly that's not going to happen on donations alone.

They are still great MMOs to play. I think you're more angry at the community that plays it rather than the game itself.

Contrary to popular belief, the devs are not wizards who transmute money into quality. They're actually wizards that conjure quality out of thin air.

Their quality as you put it is limited by their finances. Don't pair money with quality because you are right the quality comes from their own skill, but with money they can afford better equipment, a better internet connection, ultimately making Haven and Hearth more stable and allowing them to "push the envelope" even more and try new things they may not have been able to do previously.

Unfortunately for your idea, the two devs have to avoid "selling" anything. They can accept donations, but only if the don't give anything in exchange. If they give something in exchange, even if it is something intangible like lp or coloured capes or naming new recipies after whoever donates the most money each week: (Burgingham Baked Squash, Ciroth Chantrelle Omelette, Potjeh Pot Pie and Rhiannon Root Stew, perhaps?) under Swedish tax laws it counts as income... and it has to be entered on their income tax return... and it effects their income bracket/student housing eligibility... and it means Loftar could lose his apartment... and it could mean that Loftar ends up on the street with the server tucked under his arm looking desperately for an internet cafe where he can plug in the server and get warm during the cold and long nights of the Swedish winter... and too much coffee is bad for the adrenal glands, so poor Loftar could wind up turning to other drugs during his homeless days on the street... and other drugs can be dangerously addictive, so Loftar would end up approaching strange men on the street corner and selling things best not detailed here to raise more money... and if he sells the server to get his drug money, 897 regular players of H & H will finally and completely lose their source of their addiction and withdrawal will kick in, causing ugly scenes to be enacted in basement computer rooms and bedrooms and anywhere in wifi range worldwide as the game deprived players wail, pound on the walls, beg for mercy and grumpily sign in to play Farmville.

Haha, well put indeed. With that kind of reason I can see why they would be hesitant to try out some money-making ideas. Still, I want to see this game prosper and I hope they can figure out some way to get the money they need. Not just for the game, but for themselves.
