Item: Hay Bale

Buildable. 1x1. Cost: 20 (or 25 or whatever) straw, 10 string.
RIght click on the hay bale to extract a unit of straw (the same as the unit you put into it). When all straw extracted, hay bale goes away. A storable 20 or 25-unit space for your straw, with low cost (string is freakin everywhere). Keeps a listing of all the straw q's you put in and takes them out one by one, probably in any order whatever doesn't matter. Not liftable, but perfectly useful!

Something to do with one's straw to hold it instead of taking up other storage space - but only good for straw. Something one would see in an actual farm too (though normally baled with a baler, this is done by hand, thus can only hold 20 units, not very much straw at all compared to how much straw is in a real bale of hay.)

EDIT: On further thought, make it liftable - it now is preferrable to a stone mansion buildpost!

You won't be saying that in a week or two when you realize how many abandoned homes there are. A 30 second boat ride south of my village literally bring you to the ghetto. There's abandoned claims everywhere with the occasional newb taking things and raiders patrolling. It reminds me of Detroit.

Interesting concept, though I doubt people would start using this over just using a stone mansion buildpost.

The stone mansion signpost has a rather large footprint and is immobile.

Yeah, the large footprint is the issue - this can be stacked right next to your wheat field for easy use.

Though, the stone mansion buildpost is another thing - it stores a disgusting amount of straw and can be pulled from at any time.

EDIT: I posted to make the hay bale liftable.

While it's an interesting idea, the problem is that there aren't currently any items that function like this in the game.

How does it work? Do you need all 25 or whatever straw to build the item? Can you put more straw back in once you've taken some out? How to do tell how much straw is left in the bale?

I'm all for exploring the idea of raw item storage or stacks (boards anyone?) but this implementation just seems strange.

Seems like the closest analogue is the seedbag, and how there are two sprites when it's empty or full, just a construction. Probably could leave balestrings on the ground (which is the part you build) and when you fill it up, the bale actually has the hay in it.

Stackable items are possible, but don't treat it like any other containers.

Typically, the container, when used should show a window similarly to building structures:

Straws [0]

There's a counter there, and the only difference is that there's no build button, but able to store up to 50 units of straw in it.

Essentially, it's a like a container with 50 slots, but without the actual slot to show.

The problem is, straws has Quality levels so... How do you do this without removing individual data on the QL?

Maybe make it work like water + buckets? Make the quality average out if you keep tossing them in (mixing).

if building signs can preserve Q, i see no reason why this couldnt act like a sign and simply spit it out in the q you put it in. If you put in a 1 50 the na 52, 54,49 etc straw, then the first one removed is a 50, then 52, 54, 49, etc. Such things have been asked for many times for storage of seeds, boards, straw, all these items you need in large quantities. The main thing i liked about the linked suggestion above was the auto straw pickup/baler which would make the process much less labor intensive.
