Space Inside Houses

Postby jorb » Mon Aug 24, 2009 4:18 pm

The presently existing houses take up as many tiles on the outworld map as they have avaliable on the inside. This is realism.

It could be argued that giving the houses more space on the inside than they actually take up on the outside, could be seen as an abstraction of the fact that the space inside a house is more accessible, better disposed, more easily controlled and, frankly, more important, than space outside the house. This is not realism, but perhaps better gameplay. I don't really know which is best.

Question: Should houses have larger areas available indoors than they actually take up space in the main world?

I'm inclined to say no. Mainly because I want proper houses to look significantly bigger than cabins from the outside. Multiple floors, functioning like the cellar, would be the best solution for providing indoors space without taking too up much land, all while preserving realism.

What would be the benefit of making it an abstraction? It's pretty boring walking though towns with houses all the same size; greater outside size would give them distinction, and hints about their function and the wealth of their builder. Without it you would probably never know what most houses were for since you probably won't go in many other houses besides your own unless communal buildings get more of a role.

While I do believe we should have larger houses that we can construct, I also believe that houses should have a large area inside to justify the amount of time spent in constructing them.
Also that it would make them much more attractive to use.

I'd like to point out that this is not a question of whether or not I should draw bigger houses -- I'm doing that, of course -- this is a general question on how to handle the indoor house area.

As an alternative to the proposed abstraction couldn't you add new methods of storage such as shelves? Shelves could have a large number of storage slots, don't protect items from weathering when outdoors and be immovable when they contain items. This way it looks realistic and you get extra storage for the cost of so many planks.

Non-euclidean houses would bug me to no end. Maybe if it were a witch's house I could tolerate it, but not otherwise.

I agree with the rest about making it more realistic and especially Ford's point of view. Though you could do more on the abstraction when it comes to different floors of the building. Example( A building with the height of a cabin from outside but inside of it, the walls are much higher where maybe the flag of the nation or other works of art are hung on the walls like a castle.

I think timelord technology would be a big leap in the technological status of this game...

I personally think it is good as it is. I also second the selves idea.
