Good/Evil Alignment

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Good/Evil Alignment

Postby DK114 » Wed Mar 23, 2011 7:36 pm

I'm kind of feeling guilty posting this idea because I feel that I post too many topics in this forum but I cant get this idea out of my head.

Im sure most of you have heard of the "Fable" and "Knights of the Old Republic" video game series. Perhaps their good/evil alignment system can be implemented into Haven and Hearth.

Perhaps someone who has committed many crimes can have a malignant aura around him, it doesn't even need to be graphical. If you stand close to a person who is evil you feel "dread" and a box like "thorn in you foot" or "travel weariness" will appear on your screen. Of course then you will know to GTFO. Likewise, a "hope" box will appear if the person you are standing next to is benevolent.

Perhaps if you are scared that the noob hunting industry will be hit too hard by this change then a skill should be needed to see someones "aura". It can be called empathy and cost as much as ranging

What do you think?

Feel free to post changes to this idea that you believe would work better or different criteria for changes in ones alignment.

EDIT: To get around justified murders, perhaps if you have ever held a person's scent before killing them you get positive alignment and for self defense, a person who initiates combat gets the negative aura.

And I'm sure you have a firm grasp on what is good and what is evil. Fucking bioware games with their ultra shallow morality.

no righteous man raises his hand against the innocent,
a man need only strike another to make him evil."

Oh god please no.

The mechanics of Haven and Hearth - including law and justice mechanics - are amoral. I prefer them that way.

Here we make our own good and evil rather than having them pettily defined by code.

Its not like your alignment would affect game-play at all, it would just give a bit of a heads up to noobs that happen to be around you if you are evil.

This idea is meant to fix the problem of no one trusting anyone else. Its meant to get people socializing again.

its not like I want a half-assed system either though, if this idea is implemented I would want it to be well-thought out

Morals are not black and white, that's all. Is a ranger who runs around fighting off bandits Evil because he kills them? Is a thief benevolent because he never raises a hand in combat and only robs newbies without claims?

The fact that you can recognize that is why you should keep posting. :)

As in: Don't let Jackard and the kids get you down. :)

I DO think it's a bit annoying that the most rational thing to do when seeing a stranger is to immediately teleport away.

However I don't think auras are the solution, rather, they should take away teleportation
