Point redistribution.

Postby Wolfram » Sun Sep 27, 2009 11:09 pm

The ability to retrain would be nice now that the system is becoming diversified enough to warrant characters with specialties. If I spend hundreds of thousands of LP on Smithing only to realize later that I'd rather concentrate on Farming, I'd much rather correct my character than "lose" points I'm not going to use nearly as often, or worse - make an entirely new one. Considering that you can apparently totally change your personal makeup over the course of a few days, I don't see why letting one skill deteriorate while you train in another one is unrealistic. ("Last week I believed with every fiber of my being in peace, but now I'm all about pig-sticking my neighbors" sounds much more ridiculous than "I used to be a carpenter, but I've let that go; I'm going to be a world-renowned chef.")

Of course, I don't think you should be able to do this overnight, either. Certain amount of points per hearthday? One catch-all opportunity to redistribute per week? Perhaps you have to learn a skill to be able to do it? I don't know if that's the best route to take (you don't really have to learn to learn something else) but I'd rather see this implemented on poor terms than not at all.

Thoughts?

This isn't a bad idea. Maybe they could come up with some kind of penalty for this like... for every X points you redistribute, you receive half LP for X amount of time... or something of that manner. I'm sure someone else could come up with a better idea.

Bump. I'd really like to get a little more input on this.

Normally I'm all about respecs in games, but H&H is a slightly different beast - particularly because you aren't "capped" on your advancement, you can always choose to keep putting points into farming and while you'll be a little sad you spent all those points in blacksmithing they'll always be available and won't hinder your farming progress.

Whereas stats as a system actually locks you into your choices a bit. (Which sort of makes it a better candidate for respecs, or at least make it more of a choice by tweaking the system.)

Any unlearn feature should probably be gradual (cap how many skill points you can revert each day) and inefficient (you don't get 100% of the LPs back.)

I think it should come with death. You die, get to make a new character from the LP available from your old character. This is true now for non-levelable skills, but I would like to see it extended into levelable skills as well.

Potential non retarded use for the tradition/change slider.

full trad = better qual bonuses for your skills or possibly small skill multipliers (rewarding specialisation) zero ability to shift points around
full change = qual penalties or possibly skill multipliers with fractional values (punishing specialisation) max ability to shift points around

Maybe that you only get 50% LP back for undoing and that you can only undo 1 skill point per Hearth day?

this is an intuitive element that should already be in the game. i suggested the same thing, but it didnt turn out too well since you have threadshitters unable to rise above their own pettiness and would rather attack the presenter than discuss the idea

Yep, we both have posted about this previously. In my thread, loftar said something vaguely encouraging, so it is a possibility that we will see it.
