Opportunities for Nomadism

Postby p1geonman » Sun Oct 04, 2009 7:45 pm

Is the game design intended solely for a sedentary lifestyle? Additions like beds and having the entire world's QL hinge on homegrown trees make it very hard or just plain dumb not to settle down and be tethered by one's own estate. I love to hunt and explore, but I feel like I am wasting time I should be spending on crops and sausages and everything else that I can't carry with me that is so vital to progression. Also, make bedrolls because 10 straw is hard to find.

I agree with you there. We need tents, too. In the short term, if you're willing to move at a crawl, you could load up a cart with the bed and such.

Now I feel that we need a way to have specific items claimed, especially carts. If you log off with everything you have on a cart, then you're doomed.

A tent item could be made that' serves as storage/log off spot. When not in use, it should be put in the backpack, and should be the size of a board.

I say that tents should be containers about 3x4 and take up a 2x4 space. They trade off a little bit more space at the expense of taking longer to access, plus the sleepability.

once you can get cows/horses to pull carts, a group of traveling folk would be interesting to see, but they'd be very limited in where they could go with rivers and all

could be good traders

it would be nice to have tents. maybe they could claim a very small area around them, like the size of the initial area of a claim stake. it should only be possible to have one of this kind of claim at a time, but it should allow you to have a permanent "home" claim as well.

This works. Park your cart and put up your tent... I like it.

The problem with claiming mobile objects is the requirements to make one. If a cart, tent, bedroll lays down claim then Alt abuse will ensue. "This is where I want my village/camp and that guy is kinda close to it. I'll just make 1000 alts and bedroll the whole area. Done." But I agree the idea of a nomadic character (MAPPER!) sounds very exciting.

can't you currently just chuck a couple of chests in your cart and build a new claim wherever you decide to log off? I mean, you can remove claims right?

Well, yes, but you need a constant supply of bones and dreams to do this. If I play for an hour a night, I'll end up spending a quarter of my playtime finding that. I already spend half my playtime eating. You see the problem.
