Is the game balanced towards justice?

Postby CG62 » Mon Oct 12, 2009 4:04 am

I hate to say it, but I generally don't like the current scent system. It makes it almost impossible for any would-be thief to get away with their crimes.

I mean, why even include a thievery mechanic if you're going to make it possible for offline lawbreakers to be summoned for execution by someone following a scent trail?

Now, by this I don't mean that there shouldn't BE a system for tracking criminals, but I do believe that it should be a more difficult system. Perhaps a criminal could drop a cloth from his cloak, or leave a muddy footprint on a stone-paved road.

Also, to be quite honest, I'm not completely sure how tracking works, I haven't actually invested in Ranging/The black skills.

Lol.

I also feel this system which I have not investigated or played first hand is defective. Clearly I am qualified to make such a statement.

It's unfortunately binary; either it is impossible to commit a crime and escape, or it is impossible to bring someone to justice. It's never "maybe" possible.
Surprise.

I dunno, I believe there are players out there who have committed crimes and escaped, also people out there who have committed crimes and been brought to justice...

Back to the OP's subject question though, I think the game is, and should continue to be, balanced such that justice is at the advantage. People don't really need encouragement to start a life of crime.

Bah, but it's always so much more fun when you have to defend your precious goods from a thousand gold-hungry degenerates

Thanks for being honest, it clearly shows you have no clue what you are talking about.

The downfall of many theives is greed, If you leave 1-2 scents and have your hearth on the other side of the map behind brick walls it'll make you pretty hard to find and protected against everyone but the most experienced rangers, who will probably not bother over a chest unless it had something important in it. If you leave a ton of scents anyone can track you and you are as good as dead.

Fine, I'll accept that It was pretty dumb to post this in the first place, considering I have no firsthand experience whatsoever.

Gah I'm tired of having my ass handed to me on the forum. I think I'll shut up for a while now.

There's also the issue that stealth is broken.
You see a masterful engraving by Blaze. On it is Blaze, bears, boars, and foxes. Blaze is striking down the bears. The boars are screaming. The foxes are in a fetal position. The image relates to the return of Blaze in the late winter of 2009.

Sorry, didn't want to be too harsh, was just having a bit of a giggle.

Most people seem to agree that the current system of justice/thievery is pretty broken, particularly in the stealthal region, so it's not that we really disagree with you.

On the other hand, there's altvaults and inventory items can't be tracked, so if you get full tradition you can go on a robbing spree without risking anything.
