it is their actual name, regardless of whether you knew them or not. flame and I just tested this, and a pain in the ass it was getting the boar to kill the alt. tried at least 9 or 10 times until it finally decided it was sick of him.

This is a rather significant game change. This means it is possible to definitively id people. I think it should be the memorized name.

Identification means literally nothing. Late-game I've never killed someone I can't identify, nor would it even matter. At all.

Here are two situations:
  • Someone randomly going around killing people they don't know can artificially know the name of those people.
  • Someone who comes across the skull of someone they have memorized, but don't know the name of will not be able to use a skull as proof of death.

Neither of these sound like they matter.

At all.

The first one, if you don't know the person how in the fuck can you apply the name? Better yet, who the hell cares?

The second one, so be it. I don't see why a name makes literally any difference nor why you need to prove the death of someone via an item. You'll still have a skeleton with the memorization on it.

Stop making a big deal out of literally nothing.

edit: AGAIN, COME TO THINK OF IT, ONCE A CHARACTER DIES THAT NAME SHOULD CEASE TO BE RELEVANT TO ANYTHING AT ALL.

You can go on the forums and say that you killed them. Essentially it is unearned information. If you want to be able to definitively know who someone is, you should have to kin them.

It would be useful to be able to carry proof of a kill in an inventory.

Either it doesn't affect your play style, or you lack imagination. It is a significant change to the memorization system.

Edit: I will separate my derail in a moment.

By the time you've identified a character by their skull? That character "no longer exists" and is at best 20% as strong and doesn't have the same name???? Please clarify.
