Allow vending stands to take goods in return for coin

Postby theTrav » Tue Nov 10, 2009 6:11 am

As mentioned in the announcement thread, if the vending stand could take goods in return for coin, TCoB could set up a pretty robust new player economy where we pay copper for linen, and take copper for backpacks, water skin/flasks, and other gear that's useful to new players.

I know that you dev's are having trouble coming up with a reasonable solution for us specifying what we want to purchase, but to be honest, I don't really care how it works, or how crappy it is, just so long as we can do it.

For my ten cents, how about you use the recipe's that the character currently has access to for a list of things that can be placed in the buy slot, and then just a ticker for quality.

I don't care about items that can be crafted from different base materials, a scythe is a scythe whether it's made from bronze wrought or steel.

If you do something imperfect and have to change it later then that's OK too, just try to think of it as an experiment ;)

Definitely. Definitely. Definitely.
I'm thinking that the simplest way to do that would be to actually have the item you want to buy in hand, and somehow use it on the stall. Unfortunately you couldn't get something you don't already have, but most of the things you'd buy at a stall would be pretty easy to get.

There's just no way that all the items could be listed... Well, maybe if there was a huge tiered list.
You'd need to be able to set a minimum acceptable quality for items, of course.
Surprise.

I'm sure there's plenty of ways, I suspect the issue is more that J&L don't WANT a complete list of items available to players, they want things to be hidden / surprises (see fish and cheeses). As such either requiring the item or the recipe for the item seems reasonable to me

It'd be extremely useful to be able to do so, but is not at all a requirement for most of brodgars intended uses.

I was about to suggest this until I saw this thread. This is an EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT idea. The vending stands wouldn't even have to accept all items, or even all items that a given player is capable of crafting. Whoever sets up the stand could just specify what items they want, at minimum quality levels (or not, depending on the item), and those would be the only items that particular vending stand would accept. This would make the trade of frequently-traded items an awful lot easier, and would be an easy source of coins for players who don't have access to them. Coins that can be spent at other vending stands nearby...

This would make the game a lot friendlier towards newbs, as they'd no longer have to rely on established players to procure anything.

Just to expand on the above... The great usefulness of this would be to make offline trade work "both ways" -- goods to coin and coin to goods. I've read some concern here (not least from the devs, themselves) that the vending stands will force players to use coins where they otherwise might not, distorting the game's economy. Allowing the stands to sell and buy gets around that by simulating goods-for-goods offline trade. You could show up at Brodgar market with an inventory full of, say, linen, and leave with, say, a belly-full of carrot cake. Or whatever, you get the idea.

yes, i totally support this. JnL, that would make the stands really useful, plus, it would be a HUGE chance for newbies to get more integrated into trading and participating in the world! especially, as newbies often dont have the possibility to travel very far, for example from novigrad to the ring back and forth. with stands also in novigrad or any other newbie-spawning area, this would be just perfect!
i think thats what your plans on the stands was in the first place, right? giving more ppl (newbies, short-time players) the chance to trade. :)
