Weaponry Ideas

Postby eql » Thu Nov 19, 2009 4:53 am

Here are some ideas.

Currently we have only one kind of shield, a basic round shield type wooden thing.

Long Board Shield: 5 Boards 1 Cast Iron
this would look something like a long rectangular shield with iron 'plating' or 'reinforcement' particularly with a circular button in the middle.

Two Handed Sword: 4 Bars Steel 1 Bone 1 Leather
Bone and leather for the hilt or whatever. A large sword held in both hands. epic looking.

Spear: 1 Board 2 nuggets of any metal 1 String
Standard Spear. Can throw.

Staff: 2 Boards 1 Bone 1 String
Quarter Staff, used for badass beatdown.

has anyone else got weapon ideas?

Also, POISON!

Poisonous Herb: Takes off SHP slowly, higher QL herb takes it off faster. (great possibility for god herbs here)

Lesser metal daggers/knives would be nice.
A metal hand-axe (would be combat and woodcutting like the stone. Inbetween stone and B12).
Metal knuckles.

A version of the board shield with no metal. Then I'll be happy.

spears/javelins do not require metal.

It should work like fishing rods. Different attachable spearheads for different effects. One that does poor mortal damage with increased armor punching, a boar-killer head (Can't think what head the boarspears of the time used) etc.

javelins and short spears would be awesome if we could poke the animal with them and then throw them if they start running away =D

These are all cool ideas, but are basically useless without any sort of stats to go along with them. The main problem with implementing new weapons into a game is balancing them. And unfortunately It seems unlikely that J&L would spend time making new weapons available before they change the combat system (and had that many more weapons to throw out/modify), as that seems to be somewhat high on their list.

But yeah, it would be really nice to have more shields. Shields having armor might make sense? And quality needs to matter eventually. I could see like wooden shield, wood with a bar, and then a pure steel shield.

I think changing anything other than adding armor and Q to shields would have to wait for the new combat system. (honestly i cant even see those two changes)
I once dreamt of crafting beautiful thane's rings... then I discovered Big Bear Bangers. Now I smash beautiful things.

I like the way my DM handles shields in our AD&D game at the moment. If your opponent attackes you and hits your AC exactly (it's equal or greater to score a hit) then you can use your shield to block it.
If you do that for more than one attack per round, or if you get hit with a critical hit (natural 20, represents a really big hit) there's a chance of the shield breaking.

Basically the strong points of that system is:
1 - Shields give a limited small, situational boost to armor & deflection
2 - Shields can break when relied on too much or simply hit by hard enough a blow.

I also like that in D&D larger shields help defend against missiles

Stone Spear. Unlike the stone axe, it is not a very effective tool (aside from being a "sharp edge" for skinning, I suppose). However, it is somewhat more effective for fighting with, and perhaps may be thrown.
Surprise.

I'd also say make it only require militia training, considering how spears are pretty idiot-proof.
