Mansion Costs

Postby Peter » Sun Nov 22, 2009 8:38 pm

I've been working on my mansion, and while I agree they should be difficult to build, perhaps the costs could be adjusted. currently, the main difficulty with making a mansion is not the stone, but the thatched roof. This seems odd. Perhaps it should require something like 100 or so straw, and 1000 or so stone, or perhaps it should take a quantity of "any metal ore".

Alternatively, it should require a very expensive "architecture" skill. This would mean that someone would likely have to find someone to place the construction site, making an interesting challenge instead of just another grindy bit.

Just some thoughts. I've just about got there with this wheat thing. I must say, the most fun part about building it was trading for the metal.

making a very expensive new skill for stone mansions is adding a grindy bit

edit: you can also trade for the straw, people do sell straw if given a good enough incentive.

Or maybe the plants should just yield more straw. I agree that the relation between the building materials seems a bit weird. I suspect that stone would be the more expensive part of a mansion, rather than the straw.

I actually think it is fine that the mansion is so hard to build - why would one ever build cabins if it weren't so?
Maybe lower the straw cost a little bit though? straw from 600 to 4-500, stones from 300 to 1000?

Why the hell 1000 stones, that's just boring and the straw amount is fine, work for it and you get something for it.

I think it takes too much straw and too little lumber. Roofs take a lot of beams IRL.

Which is exactly what I said in my post. Thanks for reading.

What I was suggesting was NOT to decrease the cost, but to change it to something more interesting. Spamming wheat isn't interesting. I'll agree that it would be grindy to get Archetecture, and thus few people would get it. HOWEVER, those people could then be asked to place the construction sign. The cost of building a mansion wouldn't be getting the skill, it would be finding someone else who has, and negotiating/trading with them to place the foundation. Would this not be more interesting than wheat/stone grinding?

Well, I agree that my post did not add that much meat to the pot, but at least one difference is that where you suggested 100 straw, I suggested 400 - on the grounds that a mansion should not be something pulled out of a hat. 1000 stones is quite quick to get.

I like the architecture idea.

I dislike the idea of decreasing the straw cost for several reasons

1 - It took me a week (weekends on both side) of concentrated work to put up my mansion, I was helped by bullmax for a total of 10 straw which I paid him a nugget of tin to add.
This cost is not as high as people seem to think, it's not a building you should do in a day.

2 - Stone can be retrieved basically for free at a more or less unconstrained rate. Straw relies on wheat growing time, which makes people more likely to slowly construct it over time, rather than just grind grind grind grind away at it doing nothing else until it's up.
I feel people should be encouraged to work on more than one project at a time, it'll result in them playing for longer, having more fun, and insuring themselves against a problem in one single project (eggs in one basket) from ruining their entire game.

3 - I don't think everyone should have a mansion. I think it should be one or two people in a village, or maybe a communal one for a village to share. If everyone IS going to have one, I think it should be a group project, that many people work on, rather than something you do solo.
