Fat

Postby Potjeh » Wed Dec 02, 2009 9:17 pm

I've spent most of today stirring a cauldron IRL. My family slaughtered a pig, and I was rendering the fat. It got me thinking, why don't we get any fat from animals in H&H? It could be used for cooking, candle making, fuel, soap making, waterproofing stuff and a bunch of other things.

He might have been rather unpopular but he WAS right about at least one thing.

I agree with candles tho.

That is so hardcore. Yes, there should be fat. There is fat in UrW, after all.

Heh, I also took a photo of myself standing by a flank of pork, wearing a straw hat. The first thing that came to mind when I looked at it was H&H. I wish I had also taken a photo of the actual killing part, but I needed both hands to hold that sucker down while Dad slit the throat (in fact, it took three of us to hold it down, as it was a big pig - 243kg). I also used a meat grinder to make sausages. I feel so experienced right now :D

Anyway, back to topic. Soap should be a luxury, not a necessity. I guess it could be used by doctors or something, when we get more advanced medicine.

That's one epic win. :D
I do sometimes wish that I was born a few years earlier, so that I could have gotten more experience of farming before my grandparents retired.

But yes, there are tons of more things that should come from animal cadavers, apart from fat. Blood is a given, but other useful things would obviously include the various parts of the gut apart from the intestines, teeth, ears, tendons, claws/hooves, &c. The main reason you don't already get them is just because there aren't the higher-level resource chains to follow from them yet. Do expect butchering to be extended as we add more stuffing.

Mmm, blood sausage...

Also, I'm happy to see you have big plans for butchery. I want to run a horse farm/glue factory.

Is there such a thing as a Glue Horse, breed specifically to have gigantic hooves?

Using fat to make candles would be pretty nice, though I understand that tallow candles don't... erm... hold a candle... to beeswax ones. Maybe a large Q penalty?

Hm... how about candles loose one point of Q for every 60 seconds they burn, until they burn out? Something to make Q matter for them other than have infinitely increasingly bright candles or whatever?

Anyway, mmmmm...pork...
Surprise.

I'd imagine soap would have some uses in the first aid process, to clean a wound or something (did I mention I'd like First aid to be expanded upon?).

Also, Sinew. Easy source of string for newbs.

Soap could also give a "Clean Hands" buff that improves baking.
