make a RollBack on crash

Postby Dixel » Thu Feb 04, 2010 9:12 am

im not one to complain... actually, we should be literaly kissing their feet for making this game, but that doesnt mean we dont pour our hearts into the game as well... spend hours to make simple things improve...
i've noticed this before, but never hit me so hard.....
i was training some winds in a chime, checking on it and repairing it, and luckily, i was quite far from it when the server crashed....
i just came back, hoping time hadnt went thru (checking every 30-40 mins to see if server was up again, i loged back in with 30 ppl on, so i guess i was pretty close to login as it went up), only to see half my farm obliterated by the winds that rummaged with everything in its way.... (i am actually very lucky i wasnt there, or i would have died for sure)

i tried to enphasize this on the title, but if i failed to do so, PLEASE, rollback or keep a backup (when it goes down), or something, and take it back up the same as it went down...

thanks and keep up the good work....

It's not ironic. I understand that this is just a bad luck. And i didn't want to say i blame loftar&jorb for this. But yes, this circumstances r enough to ruin ~15 days of playtime.

is useless, warri :3 he ha correctly said that half of his house is now dust cause the server isn't safe. But he wasn't ungry and personally, the idea of an AutoSave when the server don't feel Answer from the clients or viceversa, isn't so bad. Some server can autosave before crash.

Ther's a way to do that o.o?

It already does that for all the time.. Thats why you get 0 hearthlings playing when it reboots, because it saves the data, then it reloads it and you get Server crashed message again.
Rollbacks only happen when saving the data fails, which happens really rarely.

I think they mean an autosave feature that's persistent in real time rather than upon down time, usually the server can capture a quick image of the game world as it is whilst running the game in this case, takes less than a minute and the game continues on.

So when the server reboots, regardless of when that is (we're talking unexpected issues, not a regular shut down for maintenance), this image is loaded rather than the previous save before down time.

We had this feature on Ultima Online, it was pretty cool, but I can imagine the implications this causes for programming code in alpha stages as new features are being implemented weekly. I was gonna yarn about how it might implemented relative to Java, but that's just a bunch of technical crap nobody needs to hear, the point I was going to make was putting this in is going to screw with a programmer's life should everything turn to shit... and it most likely will because there's no existing code to compare it to, everything's done from scratch.

I don't envy them, better left for a more complete version of H&H I think.

No, it really works. Even when it crashes (95% of the time that the server is down), the server picks up from where it left, unless data is hopelessly corrupted.

Well, even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to roll it back. The server didn't actually crash; it was just Jorb's ISP that was down, so whatever happened during the time that noone could reach the server has already been saved, probably twenty times over seeing how long time it was unreachable; and I don't do backups that regularly.
