Hearthless Scents

Postby Denvon » Tue Jun 16, 2009 7:27 pm

So with the new Crime and Punishment system comes quite a change in criminal/justice gameplay. 'Criminals' can be tracked if they're not clever enough, but there are ways around it to keep it fair for them. However one of these detours leaves me scratching my head. What if they simply make an alt, steal, drop off the goods, and never play that character again? The alt doesn't need a hearthfire and therefore can't be tracked, and it's almost impossible to find out where the stolen goods end up.

I've seen this happen once already, and I'm sure it'll happen a lot more now that I've posted about it. But is there a way to address this sort of thing?

EDIT: Subject name changed. Almost all crime scents I've found in random settlements have had no hearth, people are using this against the system.

Well, the alt would need the Trespassing and Theft skills (with regards to the latter, it's not necessary in order to steal items from inventories right now, but that will be fixed), so it isn't exactly trivial to create such an alt just to go steal something.

Also, stolen objects like carts or things you can carry away can also be tracked by the scent so that you can find them again, probably, then, leading to the main character. (Again, it's not possible with inventory items right now, but it will be fixed)

Speaking of heartless trespessers. Kaka's property was littered with clue's of most likely jorb :P
The ones who see things differently.

You can praise them, disagree with them, quote them, disbelieve them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.
And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Well I got robbed by a Hearthless Thief somewhere at lunchtime (EET) on Monday.
Sadly, but it's rather easy right now to get these skills in a couple of hours, steal iron/steel, pass it to another character and disappear forever.

I want to build an impenetable Kiln Vault to prevent this from happening to us, but so far I haven't been able to convince RaptorJedi to go along with the idea, mainly because he thinks kilnwalls are ugly.

didn't thief tracking leed to the stolen item tough? instead of the thief? in that case holding the "hot goods" could still get the player that made the alt into trouble

i find a lot of scents around the world that say the player has no hearthfire and is not logged in.

While that is a definite possibility, it might also be that the perpetrator has already been killed by someone -- at which point his hearth fire goes out and he, obviously, cannot be logged in. I'm thinking of giving this condition a separate error message (or, maybe, making it track his bones).
