Common Transportation Suggestions

Postby vikingdragons » Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:52 pm

These are very commonly suggested ides for land and water transport. I am just putting in what i have been able to find across the web.
BOATS
-Raft
Very simple watercraft that moves at crawl speed. It holds whatever you can fit on the surface. This includes carts and animals!
-Canoe
A hollowed out log. Can hold 1 person and maybe has 1 inventory slot. Moves at either crawl or walk.
-Rowboat
I know we have it already, i just have an idea for change. 1 person=walk speed, 2 people=run speed
-Barge
2-4(?) people, crawl, walk, run speeds. Large cargo capacity and a large deck for passengers, carts, and animals. Requires a dock to build and land.
-Longboat
Somewhere between 6-8 people max, either # of people effect speed or have a sail to make it fast (or both?). Requires a dock to build but maybe be able to disembark anywhere? Not as much cargo as a barge, but more than a Rowboat.
-Houseboat
A house for those who love the water. It can have a Deck, Cabin, and Hold. You can walk on the deck and in the cabin. The Hold is the boat inventory, which is between a Longboat and Barge. It can be opened from trapdoors on the Deck and in the Cabin. Maybe have 5 people max on the boat? Requires a dock to build. Maybe store a rowboat to allow you to get to shore?
DOCKS
Build a dock out of blocks and boards. You can fish off it, or dock boats for easy disembarkation. Needed to build boats bigger than a rowboat.
DRAFT ANIMALS
Make the bull a draft animal. Hook it to a plough, cart, or wagon and have it do the hard work. Maybe make leather bags to equip to it so it has an inventory.
WAGON
A large, covered wagon that must be pulled by a draft animal or horse. has crime protection like a lean-to.
HORSES
Enough said

rafts were mentioned here, already with building suggestions. longboats (drakkars, to go with the setting) and docks were mentioned somewhere, too. at least have the decency to quote the threads or mention the people you copy from.
canoes crafted directly from logs sound really cool. that would be the basic boat, available before you learn carpentry and make boards.

that thread is horribly screwed up. it is the reason i made this one. and i know all of this has been suggested, and most of it many many times. That is why i put it here, hence the 'Common' and stop promoting pontoons! They are from the Middle East/Africa/Mediterranean area. Longboats are better. Longboats are the signature vehicle of the Viking Hordes!

And Jackard and Burgingham: Guess what this is! ,|,,,

a quick google revealed to me that a pontoon is a large raft-like thing. it wasn't meant to replace the longboat. let's forget the p-word...
So the boats are: canoes (1 person), rowboats (1+1 passenger), longboats (1 helmsman + about 8 passengers) and barges (1 helmsman, 2-3 passengers, large inventory, slow, maybe carrying a rowboat to land and load goods).
Punting vessels are: small rafts (1 ferryman, 1 passenger, cargo = 1 cow or some chests), medium-sized ferry rafts (1 ferryman, 2-3 passengers and e.g. their horses) and large houseboats (also maybe carrying the owner's canoe or rowboat).

now we are on the same page!
my idea for a raft though is that it is simply a moving surface with only 1 driver and that's it. however, anything you can fit on that surface, which will hopefully be big enough to fit several people or a few animals or a cart, will move with the surface. and you cant pick up the raft unless you take everything off of it first. this way rafts can be used as ferries and such.
