Logs must be able to disappear

Postby Randozart » Tue Apr 13, 2010 5:51 pm

When I cutted down a tree, one of the logs fell on the side of a cliff, first I thought that it was no problem, but later when I tried to build a fence, it was blocking my way, and I couldn't lift it because it lie on unpassable terrain... THE CLIFF.

Same problem with water, they fall into the water and you cant get it out. It just lies there being ugly.

So my idea was (pretty obvious, and I guess not so original) that logs can disappear after a week in real or something like that. So that when your trying to build a nicely looking town, those logs dont keep lieing there being ugly. It may not be a big idea, but it would get rid of alot of logs experience-cutters (or how you want to call that) created. Or just logs you cant reach at all...

Also if stumps would eventually regrow (much slower than planted trees and/or of less quality), that`d help to get rid of the mess people leave behind when grinding.

No.

A more reasonable solution (one that has been made before) would be allowing players to lift objects from any point instead of only the center.

i rather doubt this since they have no bounding box

this is also incorrect, you can get them out using boats

What the hell is with people suggesting this? Do people think trees in rl can actually do this? Because they cannot.

It's what you get when idiots start making suggestions. It's either decay this or decay that or growing stumps and artificially added bacteria to make vinegar.

Fun fact: can too. Well, that or someone just conveniently vandalized Wikipedia.

I knew I'd seen baby trees growing off of old stumps (irl) but I never knew if that was really a whole new thing or even if someone had just spliced it in or something. And while we're on this realism/personal experiences trip, have you ever tried to remove a tree stump? It's a helluva lot more work than hacking at it with a stone axe for a couple of minutes. (And yes I'm aware this is an abstraction because removing tree stumps is no fun whatsoever.)

EDIT: To clarify, I have no strong feelings about whether this should be in the game or not.

EDIT EDIT: Oh look they actually have a name for regenerating stumps on purpose. I for one can't wait for the Coppicing update.

I preferred allowing trees to fall in other directions, or simply shifting logs that fall to somewhere accessible... Both solutions work though and are not mutually exclusive

Ok, I am not entirely correct, but if you look at those pictures, you will see that the tree is completely different in structure than it originally was. Trees don't just miraculously regenerate.

They are called nurse logs or stumps, and the trees that grow out of them are brand new trees Image.

I'm aware that it's not the 'magical tree regeneration' people are likely thinking of when they ask for it, but that falls into the realm of whether it would be an acceptable abstraction (or at least less work on jorbs part of giving ever tree an ugly 'coppiced' version). I don't think we were ever going for extreme realism here so I don't think that's grounds for shooting the idea down.

Really, though, tree planting is more than sufficient for 'reforestation' at this juncture so the whole matter is more of a thought exercise. The best solution for the clear-cut stumps probably is probably either implementing a rot for them or good ol' fashioned ripping them all up for blocks. If at some point jorb and loftar feel things just aren't complex enough we will have that Coppicing Update.

(And as an aside and in the interest of being perfectly clear, I wasn't trying to be particularly argumentative; merely informative with a hint of sarcastic/dry humor/cattiness. Probably a mistake on an Internet forum but oh well).

Well, you made a valid point. I am just sensitive about this because in the first world I cam close to massacring a group of noobs who cut a bunch of my trees insisting the stumps would grow back. All the clear-cuts also annoy me greatly.

So are you playing right now, or are you just on the forums?
