Cornerposts and gates

Postby DreadPL » Thu May 06, 2010 8:50 pm

Hello. I'm building a brick wall in the village I live in. I found it riddicoulus that you need to place another "starting cornerpost" (which requires 300bricks instead of 50 for normal cornerpost) to build a gate. I know, that I can make a squar-shaped wall and I'll have two normal cornerposts, but I don't as I'm building only three sides of square.
Couldn't admins change it, so that you can "plan" gate with only one cornerpost built? It would be much better then.
Thank you.

Plan it. Plow lines, lay stones, place initial cornerpost and build all from it.

Seems like he understands the deal with square walls, but wants to make an L shape wall that backs onto a cliff or something (warning, last I heard these are broken, you can still get in because the bounding boxes aren't flush)

It depends on which cliff wall you build up against. Some cliffs can be built flush next to. Some cliffs facing certain ways can't be built up against without leaving a gap though. Easieast way to check is to plonk down a roundpole cornerpost construction sign and put a branch in it, then try and walk between the wall and the cliff. If you can't, then you can build flush against it. If you can walk through, then you can either re-work the wall to be against a cliff that does allow "flush" building, otherwise try shift-click placement... Which is risky.

It's not about a cliff. I have a pallisade around the village already, and I want to add another "room":

EXISTING AREA + NEW AREA
O----------------O
|                     |
|                     |O*----|GATE|---O
|                     |                        |
|                     |                        |
|                     |O-----------------O
O---|GATE|----O

That's an example, it doesn't look like this exactly, but the idea is I don't build one side (left wall of new area is pallisaded, and cornerposts are next to it). Existing area is with pallisades and new area is supposed to be brickwalled so we just put an initial cornerpost (O* in the picture) an started building. And now when we came to the gate, we need to put another initial cornerpost (which costs 300bricks instead of 50).
Is there any way to bypass this problem, or could our great admins do something about this?

Protip: In your case, build a complete square brickwall, otherwise griefers will just take down two palisades to get into your new vault. There are many people out there who can tear down palisades by themselves, and only very few who can do the same with bricks.

I'd still prefer to do it my way. And by the way, on that wall between both areas there is a pallisade gate, so I'd need to make brick gate too, and it would mean that I need an initial cornerpost again

Well good luck having a brickwall just to have a brickwall because if you don't close it on all sides it's completely useless.

So there is no other way to avoid this new cornerpost?
