More predictable fishing

Postby Potjeh » Thu Jun 10, 2010 12:51 am

I've realized I haven't gone fishing in months. The reason? It's too damn unpredictable. There's too many variables involved, so what I catch (if anything) is blind luck. So, here's what I think these variables should do:

- Each lure/bait can catch only two types of fish, chance to catch a particular one modified by other stuff
- Hook, line and rod quality should determine the chance of catching anything at all; hook and line type should have an effect as well (gold > metal > bone & silk > yarn > fibre > taproot )
- Time of day should determine which of the two possible fish you catch, ie you have a night fish and a day fish, at midnight it's all night fish and at noon it's all day fish, and smooth transition in between; a fish that is a night fish on one lure may be a day fish on another
- Phase of the Moon should determine the effectiveness of a lure, ie lures have good phases and bad phases, higher class lures (gold spoon) should have more good phases than lower class (woodfish); possibly different good phases for night fish and day fish
- Quality of the caught fish should just depend on fishing spot quality, but it should also determine the success chance for fishing - higher quality fish take better gear to catch, but if you have q10 stuff you can just catch the lower q ones away from the highpoint

This means that everything that currently has effect still has it, but it translates to fewer variables so fishing is more reliable. It'd also make lures like gold spoon and steelbrush plunger more attractive, because they could catch stuff like sturgeon and eel. Mind you, every fish should still be available on at least one lower class lure. And the newbies could plan their diet better, or even fish for trade (I'd buy sturgeon and eel).

I'd be in favor of adding a new (optional) part to the fishing rod, the buoy, the combination of buoy and bait/lure would determine what you catch, no phase of the moon or time of day randomness please.

How about making the FEP fish give meaningful too? Even if I knew what I might be catching I wouldn't bother. I can always make cheese or bake some stuff.

Lets put it this way. If fish is supposed to be newbie food I get it. But why would you bother fishing when you can make high q piroz and RoBs, can have DDD and above all cheese? I have not eaten a single fish in world 3, except maybe to fill the last few FEPs...

i like to vary my diet... and since 2 (i think) of the fish recipes and 2 fish give dex it's made dex incredibly easy to raise. and fish are not very filling.

Yes dex is pretty much the only reason to bother with fish.

a man need only strike another to make him evil."

I'm still pretty low on the stats (mostly around 40) but i haven't had any trouble keeping dex along with everything else just using piro's and chickens.
Int is the only one I'm having trouble with now (mostly because I CBF raising such a useless stat)

Or are you guys talking about specifically pushing dex?

I guess the other thing worth noting is that I haven't gone nuts on cheese yet, I've only just managed to get my first brodgar blue out lately

Is it really predictable? I have no idea what the current system is, except that my newb crew seems to bring back tons of perch and bream no matter what I give them to work with. I did a little experimenting myself but eventually got disgusted with it and went back to more reliable foodstuffs. (Not like there's not tons of wheat to work with after all).

I'd like to know how the current system works before I suggest/agree with means to overhaul it. I'd incorporate more seafood into my diet if I could just figure out how to catch what I wanted, if for no better reason than to use up all these damn peas.

I don't want dex fish, I get enough dex from mussels. I want sturgeon and eel, and in the time I was fishing in this world (roughly from reset till mid-April) I got each of them *once*. I haven't caught a single plaice in this world. It's always roach or brill, with occasional bream or perch.
