The lamentations of a Chicken breeder

Postby Haba » Wed Jul 07, 2010 7:26 am

Why do I keep raising the q of my chicken?

Why?

WHY?

After breeding them since the reset, I've now around q70 chicken. With the recent changes in breeding cattle, cows will soon surpass them in bone quality. Feathers have no practical use. The FEP gain from q70 chicken meat is not that much better than q10.

And to add insult to injury, chicken coops can't be left untended. With troughs you can at least stockpile fodder so your animals wont die right away. With chicken you have no such luxury. In a few days, the coop will be full of hungry, grown up chicken. I *know* that the effort required by chicken is not large, but it is constant, daily effort.

Please, either make chicken q raise faster (faster than breeding cows/sheep/pigs) or give them another, valuable purpose. Right now no sane person would bother with chicken.

I think the baking recipes should be changed so that almost all of them require eggs. This would make chickens worth raising, and is totally realistic (try cooking a cake without egg.)

as long as FEP values are buffed to match already underpowered foods like carrot cake i've no problem with updating old reicpies but that in and of itself will not make chickens worth raising. It will indeed make carrot cakes and the like only less appealing to make unless they're given stupid values like 20+ per at least.

Here's a thought. Let us stock a coop with a trough or two's worth of fodder.

Bump the breeding margins on chickens.

I mean...they're softcapped by fodder q anyway right? so what the big deal if it only takes a month or two to get Q90 chickens?

Besides. It's a moot point anyway with the nugget prayer giving nuggets out far more reliably sooner, with less effort. Go ahead...try to make an 800str, 200 smithing char and compare the incredibly cheap nature of cheese to the time it would take to get a chicken or cow of the same quality.

Any way it goes you're still limited by farming skill and so 400 farming is a fuckton harder to get than 200 smithing and 800 str.

IIRC chickens can potentially gain 1 quality per day whereas cattle can gain 1.33, but chickens get a lot more rolls so it tends to even out. But yeah, chickens are largely pointless now that they're not a clearly superior choice for bone q. I guess chorizo is kinda nice, but doesn't really make them worth it.

Yes. Because you don't have a grasp on metagame mechanics and I'm not gonna write an essay on what happens at high quality and what softcaps what and how far down the line etc.

They are going to remove that horrible, horrible nugget prayer, right? Because IMO it beats Lembas prayer for the title of the most broken feature ever.

Yeah, and honestly....now that I don't give a shit anymore. You're totally right. That prayer is the most imba game changing update since lembas & AW in general. It DEFINITELY beats ein for IMBA and competes with lembas.

I mean the benefits of creating a character that can benefit from that prayer are twofold. Palisade kicker, 200+ saws and for some serious cheese factory villages....a brick wall basher and 500+ saws.

I think there is a point at which you can potentially cycle tree/metal/fuel infinitely upwards after you breach q300-500 saws. Even if not infinite spiral (and i can't say that for sure because like everyone else i'm not privy to actual game formulas) you still get stupid fucking upgrades just from making hammer/anvil/forge/saw from the prayer.

I'd have thought they'de have learned how awful 200+ saws are from the first world. Even cows/chickens going 300+ would worry me if it didn't take stupid amounts of time to breed them and thus reflect the massive investment required to achieve such things.

The bad thing about brick wall bashers is that between ein and the nugget prayer these toons are not only insanely valuable twofold but also, their deaths just add that much more to the affair because anyone set up to creat such a monstrosity isn't gonna stop feeding it MBC @4900 buffed because nugget prayer is always wicked, the toon can always be full trad because it needs virtually no LP which can be accumulated to about 500k when the toon initially recieves its first gen LP and stuff it into a claim reclaiming to pull out the 20k needed for vandalism and not lose it going full trad almost instantly it becomes redeployable within days after death Hell do it right with a multilayer brick wall fort (21 spaces between layers) and only someone with another BWB can get you.

Sorry but I disagree with both of you completely. The amount of effort put into it reflects what you get, the softcap definitely helps.

The only reason it's seen as imbalanced by you two is because you're considering the potential to go around this, but there needs to be some form of potential you have to continue to work towards, even a fully functioning village would take a good deal of effort and several weeks to raise a character that can get even q300 metal.

The cycle upwards means that this has raised the metagame to go from searching for resources that are already found (I mean does anyone have a q200+ soil/water/clay spot, eh, eh) to pumping stuff into a character for weeks to get somewhere.

I'm really hoping this raises mining from 'alt character bullshit' to 'serious business to be done with a 'sacrifice' tradition character'.

To get back on topic however, chicken breeding was rapidly killed by the new cowupdate but cows are more of a pain in the ass, the only problem is that they eat more, but the planning means that I can dump 20 troughs in their radius and there we go, no problem. This is all simply because they don't have a 'building' the way coops do, you probably couldn't even leave a coop un-repaired for 10~20 days and expect it to be standing, unlike cows.

Chickens need to gain quality by a higher amount. Recent updates seem to have attempted to balance things for what they 'should be' however it unbalanced things from what we expected them to be. No one says chickens should be simply for raising Bone Q (in fact it seems they're being repurposed gradually as something to actually bother growing for food), however since nothing else fits where there obviously should be something, chickens were seen by all for that singular purpose. The fact that they don't give intestines means you might as well raise cows for multi-purposing as intestines(Rennet, sausages), bones(saws, hooks, etc), and milk.

It seems that the current way things work:
Cheese? - Cows fill everything you need, and more.
Sausages? - Sheep fill everything you need (now pigs do too)
Neither? - Chickens can fill your gap.

Eventually Pigs will get their own reason to be grown too, and hopefully chickens will either be boosted or repurposed.
