That's only true for some types of forests. I've been in a lot of Australian bushes where the canopy isn't heavy enough to block all the light, and mobility within that bush is severely hampered.
I have no idea at all what germanic forests would have been like though... If it's all pine trees then don't the needles basically kill everything that's not a pine tree?
