Well, yes. If you have an XMPP (also known as Jabber or GTalk) address, it's possible to register it with the server and have notifications sent to it. We're also considering sending warnings about force summoning the same way. It's in place and working quite nicely; the only thing really missing is website functionality for actually registering an address.

If you give me an XMPP address, I can register it manually for you, though.

does it only send messages when they enter your claim or summon you? or are there other things that trigger it too? like entering your villages claim?

Right now, it's only triggered by people entering your own, personal claim.

Well, they didn't, on the other hand, vanish from the world each time they went to bed either. :)

Jorb seems to be of another conviction, but I do find it fully reasonable that people have some kind of knowledge of what happens around them. If anything, I think it could be argued that the message should only be triggered when actually walking on land that has its owner's hearth fire on it.

Or only trigger it if the person is logged out in the area, and make them roll perception and exploration against stealth and int of the thief.

This is a really bad idea.

Why have sentries or town watches or patrols or actual interesting player-based town defense and interaction when you only need to log on when you get an email warning?

Please, please don't have this.

We don't have any of those things and never will. It's a game. People aren't playing 24/7. Consider this a 'town watch'.

We might, if a town gets large enough it wouldn't be unreasonable to expect people to be online there around the clock and maybe make the odd patrol to check the settlement.

Email alerts aren't going to do much to help me while I'm asleep or at work though, so I don't see it being a particularly dramatic feature.
