I should see them work like nestable boats with a limit to the number one can stack in a combine window like wagons.

Incidentally I should like to see boats carryable by cart or wagon. with obvious nesting limitations. If the boat would take four spaces that'd give for being able ot put chests in the boat but restrict, obviously boat in a boat but and this suggestion are probably just something for loftar to mull over while considering the revamp on the inventory system.

in the end it would make creates take more space as you would need to restack them. Perhaps empty crates might stack higher to allow some creative designs and emergent gameplay.

I take it your using crates because you can easily create them in the wild without the need for additional resources.

As a potential alternative. Wooden Chest. (If you have the nuggets for it)
+ bigger inside.
+ smaller footprint. (can be placed in a nice tight NS* column when using [shift+rightMouseClick]
*) North-South direction.

But stacking crates has a nice ring to it.
Stacking 4 of them would be just shy of a full chipboard. (minimum to make it space profitable)

Thus the conundrum, because most newbies don't wind up with metal for a few weeks, dependant upon their time structure of play. I myself am going to just trade for metal, rather than finding a mine, because the area I am in is pretty much civilized all over right now for miles around.

Finally, a reason to use HQ wood to make crates! XD

I dislike the idea of a rack. The idea of using stackable crates on their own, is for ease of use, any time anywhere.

No for racks, unless building one will let you stack even higher. Is it stacking if it's in a rack? ..? Either way +1 for stacking crates.

So long as crates can't be lifted as a whole, it works.

It doesn't make cupboard obsolete because it makes crates as a viable storage container, whereas you want cupboards to be as easily accessible as possible.

If you want to access Crate 1 and there are 2 crates on top, you're forced to lift and move em to a empty spot, then lift and put em back up again.

A "Shed" dedicated to store containers so they don't decay can be handy, it keeps it out of curious eyes. So instead of someone quickly prying through your bunch of containers, they wouldn't really go through a entire shed interface full of containers to see what's in it.
