This has so many awesome possibilities. Build a well. Hide stuff in the cavern below. Use as a hidden exit or entry to villages, hideouts, etc.
I'm not worthy enough to capitalize the "e" in "english" because all I do is butcher it.

Perhaps wells are constructed differently than mines, such that trying to dig in the cramped space of the bottom of a well results in the area collapsing?

Well, indestructable fortresses aren`t nice either. Then, you can always build a layer of walls underground to prevent yourself being raped by maniac diggers.
