I'm all for an outer zone where stronger and smarter and much more dangerous enemies exist. so long a swilderness spawning is disabled in this zone.

I would love to see that :D

that would require a gaint wall seperating the inner grids from the outer grids...hmm...
or maybe just a large 'box' to bansih people into...although a massive wall would be a fun challenge...i can see it now: Invasion of the Outcasts!!!

I think our current challenges need to be fixed up to actually be challenges before we take on greater challenges, though. Sure, everyone's raving about trolls and how scary they'd be if they could swim, but that's the kind of level our bears should be at.

Simple: Raging waters. If you sit still for more than a few seconds, you'll be carried in every which way.

How to fish.
Step 1: Apply Anchor?

Why would you fish? You'd only catch pirahnas (dammit where does that H go) and barracudas.

I think it would be awesome if the world got tougher to survive the further you got towards the "End of the World", distance wise. I also always thought it would be cool if like, there were gigantic deserts and seemingly endless oceans on the edge of the world, with vicious new animals and stuff. Like sea monsters and gigantic sandworms like in the game "Darksiders".

It certainly would make exploring fun.

Yes a desert or a semi wasteland at the borders would definitely be cool, few trees, crops grow slow or not at all, very few water sources/rivers=more challenging hunting, few and far between mining nodes but the ones that exist are of good quality(maybe have diamonds only be here), paved (unclaimed)stone roads decay/revert to land, faster decay, food spoils, more hunger drain, tools decay, villages drain more authority, quicksand, small tornadoes, draughts=rivers dries out and crops wither, all animals are aggressive and actively destroy any constructions they come across(not walls or houses),poisonous fauna, more animal activity at night maybe trolls group together and try to smash your settlement walls, and you don't leave scents(?).

A place for hardcore survivalists and villages who are willing to take the risks to get better ore.

I agree that we should wait a bit, not alot of people have got with the program. Of coarse you couldn't just afk in the middle of a river, if the boat sits on the water too long, wood worms or something like that begin to eat your boat, causing it to decay out from under you. I also like the ideas for a wasteland outside the border.

"The light of civilization has banished the darkness of paganism and the wild unknowns!"
Trans: Here, have more land. Knock yourselves out.

Though to add to the discussion.
Personally, I'd like some more visual and audial cues caused by a areas civilization level, (influenced by active hearthfires, buildings, pavement, etc. (but not dirt roads)), where the sound ambience becomes increasingly moody and oppressive, the nights seem darker, the days don't seem as bright as back at your safe village. The terrain becomes increasingly difficult to traverse, with more swamps and bramblethorn, (or worse!) trees look ancient and gnarled, the further out you get, (not to mention the animals will be vicious), then you enter Mordor, where bogs can suck a man and his horse down to a watery grave, mists are annoyingly recurring and the wood is hard as steel. (And might take offense if you try to bring some home for your precious herbalist tables) and everything tries to kill you. Or lure you into a 'tragic accident' (See: Will-o-wisps)

A harsh, dark, unforgiving hellscape of thorns, marsh, almost impassably thick forests, savage wildlife, marsh and death. Where only fools, outlaws and suicidally brave venture.

Of course, this can be mitigated as any settlements close to this dark Moor(dor) will inevitably force it to recede.

Though they might get some pretty savage bear attacks while settling.

If they're lucky.

Of course, there's always someone who enjoys a good challenge and start headbutting bears in them ancestor-forsaken lands. And if they're successful, more power to them.

Not saying it should be like EvE online, where all the good stuff is and goes on in the border-regions of space while everyone and their dog huddles in the imaginary "safety" zone in the center. Just want some visual cues in case I am heading in the wrong direction when exploring.

And maybe some place where boars won't spawn under my bough bed and eat my delicious raw hearthling meats.

edit: As I'm posting this, I realise my membership tag is absolutely ridiculous, I should change it...

put those wolf models to work as slighty modified (as in larger, darker, and all around scarier looking) as Wargs or some other kind of 'evil wolf' also modifed Dryads into Killer Tree People, evil bears, and will-o-wisps that 'hide' a deadly bog until you get to close, then reveal it as soon as you step on it! quicksand, piranha, barracuda, thorn vines that actively attack you and are immune to ranged damage, meaning you have to get right up in there and chop 'em down. raging rivers that through your boat this way and that, with rocks in them that cause a decay hit if you tocuh them. And Birds of Prey that swoop down and kill you! and Killer Ants that are aggresive! and Gaint Boars that kill a GROUP of heartling sin one hit! and Dragons!!! that guard Treasure Hords full of gold, silver, jewels, and Unique Items! so get out there, brave the darkness of Mordor and get those Unique Items and take over the Hearthlands with their power!!!
sorry, i just had a brainstorm about the kinds of things one might possibly encounter in the Endworld/Mordor/Outer Hearthlands/Wastelands/whatever.

The reason trolls are so fun right now is because how impossibly rare they are. If they were everywhere i assure you that youd get bored of them in a day or two. Haven and hearth is alot more fun with animals being more scarce because when you do find a bear you scream silently "HELL YESSSS" back in world 3 when bears were alot more common id just pass them by going meh another bear. I love the changes to that.
Early world exploit: Put your hearthfire inside a cave, then hold shift to position a claim right in front of a cave. After 8 hours the claim will be unbreakable. Since your hearthfire is inside the cave, you can still get back inside, and leave, but nobody will be able to enter, effectively making you unraidable for the first 3-7 days. Enjoy

We can agree that it should not be a nice nor hospitable place to be though, yes?
