I think a tent should use a dried hide, and branches. The branches would represent both the sticks that hold it up, and the stakes to keep it on the ground.

Dried hide does have a lot going for it- at the very least, it would mean that you wouldn't need a lot of infrastructure (well, tanning tubs and a place to keep them for a couple hours, anyway) to make them.

But, I'd imagine that they'd be portable. How about they can be packed up into an item that can be worn like a backpack? If that was the case, they could require things like flax or leather to make because travelers could buy them or make them in civilization...

However, anyone with money to buy them or resources to make them wouldn't need them. So dried hides actually sounds ok. I'd imagine these would be more along the lines of tepees. If that was the case, it would be nice to be able to take down an empty tepee for hides and sticks again.

Hides take up to much space but is a good idea, maybe different kinds of tents like Linen is the worst then leather then a hide.

With the sheep shortage Linen > Leather. Because, if Linen < Hide then linen tents will be seldom used. When re-setting up a tent, perhaps have a chance to break your tent (ruining all/most of the materials) based on quality and some skill. Everyone here also seems to be forgetting about silk. Although it may sound stupid at first, silk tents could be insanely durable (Virtually unbreakable?) and might provide extra room, or some other fancy advantage (Perhaps have pouches in the walls that can be used when the tent is set up)
