Dried hide does have a lot going for it- at the very least, it would mean that you wouldn't need a lot of infrastructure (well, tanning tubs and a place to keep them for a couple hours, anyway) to make them.
But, I'd imagine that they'd be portable. How about they can be packed up into an item that can be worn like a backpack? If that was the case, they could require things like flax or leather to make because travelers could buy them or make them in civilization...
However, anyone with money to buy them or resources to make them wouldn't need them. So dried hides actually sounds ok. I'd imagine these would be more along the lines of tepees. If that was the case, it would be nice to be able to take down an empty tepee for hides and sticks again.
