you way less wood than before to cover the same area.
this was done both so you had more space between them, but also to reduce cost.

the larger radius means that you need to build 1/4 of the amount that you previously did. go plant some trees you baby.

The doubling of the support radius more than doubles their efficiency and the wood is laughably easy to get now you don't have to mass them. All in all this is no longer needed.

Yea the cost is now something like 1 block of wood per mined tile which would be translating to something in the neighborhood of 2 blocks per bar of final smelted metal, a trivial input cost for something 0f such high value.

Support cost is OK since radius increase IMO.
