Wrong.. Run it through a crucible, turn it into nuggets, and back into a bar.. Voila, you discovered the bar.

But can you craft nuggets?

Except babysitting steel is a bit time consuming as well as a responsibility that I have to keep thinking back to. I would rather trade something that I have they want so it is not completely useless. I also definitely do not want to to farm bricks to make the fortress. I imagine Sodom loved brick provides pre and post decay era.

Actually some good points were brought up. It sure will make trading for finished goods more interesting, rather than the materials themselves. It will come, in the end, to who's the better crafter, rather than who has the best materials. So it does add some depth to the trading dimension, but it still stops people from acquiring the basic metal tools by trading the cheapest metal.

I actually realised this will hit me too soon.. I'm wanting to build a mansion, i have the straw production going, and stone and wood are easy to get.. but i wont get the recipe for it unless i discover a hard metal... which is kind of a shame, since now i'll have to find a place to store all this darn straw until then... 600 straw takes a whole lot of room :x... I originally just wanted to trade for the steel, but that wont allow me to actually build the mansion myself.. Along with the steel, i'll have to find someone that can craft the mansion to start the construction for me. I suppose that creates a new profession, i'm going to have to find me an architect!

Trade for ore instead, run it through a smelter, and most likely.. Yes.

Or get whoever sells you the steel to also build it into your mansion.

What this is going to do is also encourage people to change their specialties. Right now I am 100% nature and not doing any mining, but I expect in a week or so I will switch to being a miner... and after I get the basic trade down, switch back. It's not like it is impossible to change from full nature to full industry once a month.

This is why the new system is so interesting. The old system no longer works and we get to try to figure out the best way to do things now. Relationships are going to change. If you need to have a steelsmith place your corner posts for you, you have a different relationship with the metal vendor than you did in the old world. What is changed is the details of the interdependence of trade. It may be that there will still be a market for wall quality steel but that the steel makers won't want to be bothered with selling it because they can only sell it if they deliver to the building site and the additional travel will make it not worth it. At which point you might get a middleman, someone who buys steel and then builds walls for a price. And yet the price of steel might go down because most people opt to do their own since they want the skill now that they didn't need before.

What are the chances of leased mining time occurring? I might want to mine just long enough to get the ore. One sample of it is all I need. I might be willing to pay well for a mine that has been rendered safe for me to do this. How about opening a university where you train in all trades.... Ooh, the possibilities!

It's completely fair to say "It doesn't work anymore!" It sure doesn't. But heck, now it is so much more interesting!

why would you waste steel on a mansion? just use cast or bronze.

Imagine doing 9000 bricks with only chests and no Sacks or Merch Robes 7 days into the server.

I will also add with only HF teleport. ;)

Trading for farming seeds is fine, because when you plant it, and harvest it again your then re-discover the seed. Therefore, LP.

I managed it quite well. I'm actually considering buying weaponry from this nearby village.

For some strange reason, I have the idea that JLo envisioned things like that all along when they implemented the system the way they did.
