this is so stupid

it's called a minehole

mineholes wouldnt be worth anything if you could make a cave for almost nothing

yea i do see where your coming from, but i made another post a few after the OP
so i'll repeat for those who didnt read

ITS NOT A MINE. YOU CANNOT MINE FROM IT. IT IS JUST A HOME IN THE CLIFF
all that happens is you dig out your cave which only extends a certain area, after you reach the limit of that area you cannot mine any further. it just gives enough room to make a comfortable living space, if you dont want to be out in the open, most likely there would be a visual difference to these and regular caves so you dont try to mine them all the time.
and if you leave yourself room you can build a minehole inside it.
SO IT DOSNT AFFECT THE USEFULLNESS OF MINES AT ALL.
glad to have cleared that up

it's just a place to live without having to build houses and such or if you have a large farm it would make a good cheese cellar.

Sooo... how should this be treated with the various subterranean layers? Should it be on layer 1 with all other caves and surface mines? Should it be a 'pocket space' like a cellar? If it's on the same layer as any other cave or surface mine, why shouldn't anyone be able to mine into it just like anyone else risks by living in a cave? If it's a pocket space like a cellar, should it need special tools to dig out? What size should it be? What, exactly, are the advantages to this over a normal cabin or house (or even mansion) with a cellar?

So far all I've seen is a half-baked idea with no real merit. With a lack of any further description, nobody really knows what you're thinking of. Score one for the forum trolls in getting you to rage.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

lol it wasnt rage, just mild frustration.

as for your questions i'll answer them as well as possible
1. it would be on the same layer as caves, though i'd have to assume that it would be made of cellar tiles, because if you cant mine out anyfurther then it wouldnt be reasonable that others could mine in.
2. no special tools could mine any further unless the devs were to implement hand used drilling machinery, which they shouldnt because it wouldnt fit the setting at all.
3. the advantages would be, its easier than building houses in the term that your not deforesting a large area to build your village houses, and i think it would suit the hermit life. it might not have that many advantages over a mansion with a cellar except for the excess of boulders that mansion cellars produce, but i still think it would be great. as ive said it dosnt showw up on the minimap. so if you built the <for the sake of no-one being confused lets call it a dell, though im open to better, more fitting names> dell and put a small wall and gate around it no griefers on boats or just in the area would think anything of it. and if you built a minehole inside it you could discover a large deposit of gold and no one would even notice as there is no visible mine or large wall around the area, which basically is a great way of saying "look at me i have some good valueables, come exploit any gaps in my defences"

although once a mine is built inside the "dell" there is nothing stopping people mining into your second layer then climbing the ladder to your dell

if you have more questions or want more explanation just ask, not complain and whinge.
also thank you above post for pointing out the flaws and helping me to understand where i went wrong, unlike most of the other posters here :)

I think this is a GREAT idea that would be awesome if you could dig caves!

edited the OP so people will hopefully understand what others have not. THIS IS NOT A MINE HOLE

its just like a nomads house where he would stay for week or so before moving on.

however, those who are able to do more than troll this thread, could you please help me decide wether it should act like a natural claim, or should you have to place a stake outside it like with normal caves

of course its not a major issue or balancing problem. its just another trivial thing for them to play around with and have fun with. thats why the game was made was it not.
so here are your uses. im sure i could go on if you want me to.

hmm how about as a solution to houses for nomads that will abandon them a few days later, where its not worth the time building a house.

a good storage space for cheeses and other things.

if you have a largly populated village where you have a system of communal help <contribute more than you consume> then you dont need a personal plot, well heres a fun solution if you still want a house.

-if you prospect a very good mine vein below you. its a good way to disguise your mine and storage for all those crates.

-good for temp camps
-if properly minimap hidden then its a good hideout spot.

-general use for cave-fanatics and mine nuts.

-diversity, and choice, in your homestead

-makes it a whole more cozy feel, which jorb has stated before he wants the game to have

jorb wrote:I think, in general, we need to implement stuff that gives a feeling of being "settled", without necessarily demanding the effort of kilns or five thousand cut logs.

this is achieved by this. though other stuff would be cool to, like the mobile fur tent, fire pit, wagons you can sleep in.
