But that only works if people know to look into the basket expecting to find your 'signs'

Also the basket might randomly decay and explode, leaving your temporary sign all over the floor.
Though, by the time decay would get to it, it might no longer be needed.

There seems to be a consensus that a signpost of sorts would be nice, but it is not clear what the exact mechanics should be. To put some meat on the bones, I'll flesh out one possible solution.

The Signpost (Version G.01)

The Signpost is a immovable, destructible building, comparable to the Drying Rack in appearance and size.
It costs 4 branches, 3 boards and 4 bricks. (it has a small, tiled roof)

It has 36 inventory spaces, much like a chest, but can only hold written or unwritten parchment (possibly also select other items - e.g. hides?)

Alternatively, it has 30 inv spaces, divided into a "news" section of 6 slots on top, and an "archive" section of 24 slots on the bottom. The ingame graphics will change slightly depending on whether there is an item in the "news" line or not - much like the Drying Rack graphic changes based on raw/dried status.

This sounds more like an in game bulletin board than a signpost.

The bulliten board is nice, but a sign has the advantage of being permanent and unchangeable.
Surprise.

re bulletin board:

instead of "news" and "archive" (modern techincal terms) use something more low tech, "new", "old", and just have stuff on the board decay over time until it disappears.

The clue with the distinvtion between "news" and "archive" is not the words, but the fact that players can "force" attention to new messages ad changed graphics, while still having room for old ones. General (slow) decay of all parchment is a nice idea.

Also, sorry for hijacking the signpost thread with my bulletin mechanics, I agree they are different and both would come in handy.

For bulletin, instead of acting like an inventory it could show a picture of all the notes on the board. Old notes would fade over time and would be un-removable. To post a new note, one would simply tack it on (tree sap?) to the board in an empty space, or over top of an old note. If drawing was implemented, people could make fancy bulletins and whatnot. If the note piled up too far (It would probably take a long time, and the bulletin would have to be taken care of) one might have to scrape them all off with a tool of sorts. In doing so you would probably receive some item like "Wad of parchment".
