Whats preventing you from doing that now? Maybe the surname should be the account name though.

The lack of surnames in the game is what's preventing me. I have already had fun running characters like Lorb and Joftar.

Your suggestion about the account name be the surname is a good one. That would work.

Why should anything prevent you from scamming people by impersonating someone else?

I'm not saying anything should, and given the dev's track record on this, I don't think anything will either.

I got the impression that some of the earlier posters felt that surnames would become a comfortable means of finding out who they can trust, and I wanted to point out that the idea might be open to exploitation...

Carry on. Curiosity and experimentation on conjecture is to be encouraged. You guys all rock!

I also think that it would be cool if the surnames were randomly generated for each account.
Just ideas :)

If your surname is your account name, then I would expect a one-time account namechange option.

I mean, it would eliminate the utility of murder alts if all characters had the same surname, but I dislike it because of roleplaying interference.

Or, you know, you can establish multiple family lines on one account by letting players do what they want.

How about this. When creating a new character, you have the option of either taking a former family name by inheriting from their runestone, or creating a new one with a brand new character.

Oh, and having a name given to you from a predetermined list is a bit dull in my mind... Why wouldnt you be able to set your own last name? I personally like the idea of it, and still allows the ability to impersinate someone... At least to an extent.

Depends on if other characters are ever able to see your ancestors, and how such a thing would work.

Yes, but I don't view it as a valid playstyle. That particular issue has already been discussed to death, however, and I'm not interested in going into it in this thread.
