All the more that needs to be said. Just cause you nooblets haven't been around long enough to see a world larger than 5x5 doesn't mean they haven't existed.

If the world edges did "wrap around" (the American term for it, not sure if it's universal), then those issues would be:

What if there were a claim extending over the edge? What side would it go to? It's even more of a problem with a village claim and flags/banners.

What if someone built a wall overlapping the edge? Would it get split?

what if someone built a house overlapping the edge?

Suppose more could be listed, but I think that's enough. Solve those three problems, and you can probably solve them all.
Opinions expressed in this statement are the authors alone and in no way reflect on the game development values of the actual developers.

the largest a world has ever been was 55km x 55km, which is roughly the size of Luxembourg

Luxembour can be a pretty vast land though if it is only populated by a few thousand people. Not that i want to justify making the world a globe with this argument. Just saying.

'You can't build that there.'

Problem solved? Just have narrow strips of land at the edges to be connected that doesn't allow for anything to spawn or placed on it. It would look weird and unnatural BUT it works.

If it wrapped around there would be no borders, therefore a problem like that wouldnt exist

It'd be cool, but it'd probably be annoying to implement on the devs part. And of course, like mentioned, if they decided to expand the world it might cause issues.
