I'd argue that bows have several tactical advantages over melee weapons. Shooting from a boat, shooting from behind a palisade, backing up in combat. There are situations where they can probably be a lot more useful than conventional wisdom would have it. Their biggest drawbacks are of course 1) No backpack, and 2) Arrow management. 2 should be fixed, and it could be argued that 1 should be as well.
