EDIT:
A thought occurs;
By plowing small patterns into the ground before mapping the area, you can create an indelible watermark, like the fake roads in some real maps. If you see a map you didn't sell that has the watermarks, you can trace it down to the real criminal

you can copy maps you know

Um, yes. I do know. That's why I added that edit.
Surprise.

If you find a map of an area that you yourself have mapped, normally you can't be sure if it was your map, a copy of your map, or someone else's work. This way, you can just check for your "watermark", and if it is present, then it's a map you made, and may now freely prosecute the person who sold you the map.

...unless that person got it from someone who lied and told them that he had made it

Or you know made it during the long period between map updates when the minimap still had the watermark.

/support, for do-something-photoshop-can't map item features

[Edit - And of course, in order to make it even more useful when you click on a map and have the character physically walk there, that the player be actually capable of passing through whatever obstacles there are. I'm looking at you, impassable non-shallow rivers!]

I agree that the maps need improvment in game. I personally clip together local maps in paintshop -- third party -- because I can't stand the low resolution of the regional maps. The lack of markers for good resources/other arbitrary points of potential interest also limits their use, as well as the aching buttload of inventory space needed to handle several local maps. The problem is that the client would basically need a small paintshop of its own if all the functionalities I get with psp are to be available in game, which is something I do not have the heart to ask loftar to do.

Combine these two and you're going in the right direction. Allow us to clip together maps at will and scroll/zoom. That would be a huge step in the right direction.
